Charlie and I were talking last night, and he said he's talked to several newbie dudes who were Rather Put Out to discover they were female.
He thinks, and I agree with him, that the client (or better yet, the installer) should have male and female radio buttons on them, so newbs can choose their gender before popping in for the first time. We both like that newbs look alike, but think it might be nicer to them to allow them this choice.
I'll let Charlie summarize the rest of the conversation we had about this. Just wanted to start the ball rolling here.

I think I know why LL made everyone female by default. Cuz they figure that all guys want their own boobs (and umm... "etc"  to play with =) #!

if your going to go as far as letting them choose Male/female at the Loggin, then why not make the entire "first time" loggin a character customization screen prior to game entry ?
Most games are setup like this if they have customizable characters...
would save alot of time them standing at the welcome area where we all know is Probably the most lagged area in the game, some people get the wrong impression of the game simply due to the lag issues experienced at that welcome area..
I wonder how many just log out and dont come back for that 1 reason alone?
maybe not many but I would bet some have.....
anways was just my 2 cents worth

VERY good point. If we don't have lagmonster newbies (sorry no offence we al were at one time) all standing there customizing theair av's it would be easier for them to take off and explore right away. Also it would be easier for the lindens to help out with other game functions right away instead of guessing if the new person with their arms out wide, is actually doing anything or what not.
