I gotta ask - on the download page, it says Win2000/XP. I've been running Second Life on Win98 for the past week, and it not only runs great, but because Win98 itself uses less memory then XP, it runs better on this machine then it does under XP due to limited memory. Is there a reason it says Win2000/XP only? (please don't change it to not run on Win98, as it is working very well).

Oh yeah, setting draw distance from 256 to 96 made an amazing difference too, apparently with draw distance so high, it was downloading everything that was 256 units out, and that was consuming an obscene amount of memory and swapfile. I changed it to 512 for the fun of it, and it was unplayable. 96-128 seems to be the sweep spot on this machine. I still get swapfile bloat after a while, but at least it's playable :)
