If you've been raising Linden Dollar or cash donations in-world for Katrina victims and haven't contacted me yet, please post the current total raised in this Forum topic, or contact me directly via IM/Private Message/ [email]hamlet@secondlife.com[/email]. I want to get as accurate an estimate of total SL donations as possible, both for an upcoming NWN entry, and for a major media outlet which just contacted me, asking after that information. (So it's a great chance to showcase the community spirit of Second Life.)
Please post or send me the information in the following form:
"Since [date the Benefit start], [Resident(s) or group name who organized Benefit] has raised [L$ amount-- or cash amount, if direct currency donations were pledged] through a [describe in-world benefit/event/donation box/etc.]. Proceeds will go to [name of non-profit/charity]."
So, for example, "Since September 2, the Katrina Cordova Relief Guild has raised L$52,000 through a '24 Hour Free Build Telethon Challenge in Cordova'. Proceeds will go to the American Red Cross."
If you plan on having more benefits later this week, also add a line naming the time/place/event.
Please send me the details today by 9pm SLT/PST. Thanks!

Still need donation tallies! The media story I mentioned is here, on the BBC's website. The BBC's article has generated even more mainstream media attention, so I still want tallies from everyone running Katrina benefits. I'm positive the figure of $3300 I gave to the BBC is lowball, because there's so many events and benefits out there I'm not even aware of. So if you know Residents who are running benefits in-world who don't read the Forums much, please forward this link to them, and have them contact me!

Hi Hamlet, Many Burning Life artists are putting up donation booths with free gifts around our builds. We've just started putting them up, so I don't have any sort of tally for you, but Cory Edo kicked it off, so you might want to contact her.

I have seen two small ”donate” boxes in red.. at Verloren.. at the TP port.. with the owner name of (let Linden check them)...
I am very unsure of those are for this purpose - are there fakes out in SL??? At more places if so??
We had a similar problem (if so) in Sweden - when the sunami hit Asia.. - some mean people was out in our country begging for money using Red Cross and similar names ... but was al fake ones..
By the way how many have seen that huge fantastic replica build in Verloren (207, 132)??? Its worth a special tp.. to have a look at - no its not a mall - its fun.-))))

I've noticed the donations and support have been dwindling as the days go by. Granted, I expected it; it's still a bit disheartening. I'm going to continue to try to collect donations for the victims no matter what though.
The validity of the donation signs is always a concern. I completely understand those who choose not to donate to the one created by our group. To those who express doubt, I simply direct them to the memorial with the sign maintained by pathfinder and flipper.
Call me naive, but I have a lot of faith in my fellow slers , and would like to think that the vast majority of them are upfront, honest, caring individuals who are in this for the good of the victims.
We just have to keep at it. They still need us.
Right now Katrina Relief is working on organizing a large yard sale/raffle/auction for this coming Saturday. People are starting to put out items for perusal throughout the week. Take a moment to stop by and see if anything strikes your fancy. Lanercost (76, 115). Tahnks to Walter Night for the use of land and the memorial.

I think it might help if those with donation sites listed exactly what organization the money is going to be donated to. I for one will not donate to certain organizations due past experience with them but will to others. Just a thought.

It does help to let them know, that's for sure, which is why I let people know that ours is going to the red cross. What I actually do is collect donations, then visit the memorial and put what I've collected into pathfinder's donation sign. I figure that way, should the Lindens truly wish to check, they can verify that every linden cent donated to my organization through me truly does go to the right place. Just a little CYA *grin*
But I also think people are getting a little tired of hearing about it and are ready to move on. Kind of want to put it behind them and escape from the realities of rl. I can understand that, so I'm just not going to be quite so obnoxious about my fundraising techniques. *grin*
