Speaking as a liberal, we were going to get around to telling Boston clergy that it's okay to molest young boys, but gosh darn it, we were so busy sending mixed messages to our friends the terrorists and figuring out ways to destroy the sacred institution of marriage that we never got around to infiltrating the (staunchly conservative) Catholic church.

The obvious question that occurs in the Catholic pedophile cases, is if pedophilia is at a higher percentage than that of secular catholics.

In other words - does the fact they are required to be both chaste and celebate - lead to a mesurable increase in occurances child molestation?

If that were actually happeneing, you could make the opposite arguement from the articcle the OP pointed to. Namely its the conservative, non liberal , sexual limitations placed on priests that in some way contribute to the increase in pediphelia.


Of course there are numerous studies that argue that pediphelia isnt about sex, etc. That isnt my point. My point being that there is of course sexual desire in most humans. Most humans dont attempt to be celebate however.

Not a doctor or psychologist here, but… I think the fact that there are men who enter the priesthood to suppress or “cure” their pedophilic urges leads to a higher percentage of sexual abuse in the church. Whether they have a sincere desire to stop their behavior or not, they are then in a position of respect, intimacy, and power, particularly to children, and therefore at great risk to act upon their urges.

OR: not treating the problem + opportunity + secrecy = abuse.

I don’t think that celibacy would turn a normal healthy human into a pedophile. But I think that repressing any powerful urge can eventually lead to deviant behavior.

Pedophilia should be repressed of course, or, preferably, to the extent that it is possible, treated. It doesn’t appear that the Catholic church is doing a very good job of this, however.

At any rate, for Santorum to condemn the entire city of Boston for the church molestation scandal is ludicrous in the extreme.
