About building stuff. A noob question

I just joined SL a few days ago and I was curious about a couple of things.

1. How much does an average sized, average furnished house cost to build? I know any answer will only be a ball park figure, but I'd like an idea of construction costs before I even attempt anything.

Of course it'll be a Loooooooonngg time before I try to build anything like that. Last night I was able to create a small wood box!! I then (gasp) made another box and managed to place it on top of the first!! OMG!!

2. If you don't like something you made, how do you deconstruct it? I just can't figure this one out.

3. Can anyone direct me to a guide on building stuff? For instance, how on earth do you start with a wood bo and somehow make a potted plant out of it?!?!?!?

4. Scripting. Is there a guide for this? A real simple one? I think "Scripting for Dummies" would be too advanced, maybe something along the lines of "Scripting for complete and utter imbeciles and brain-damaged idjets"

If I ever do make a house that looks better than a 2 year olds pile of blocks, I want to have meowing cats moving around.

5. What's the deal with taxes? I see a lot of people talking about it, but no specifics.

See you folks online. :)

It really depends on what type of house and how detailed it is, as well as how you want to detail it (building vs. texturing). I’d say you can get by with under L$1000 (that’s 100 objects… should be enough for the walls and a decent amount of low object furniture). If you use the houses in a box, I believe they are a lot more expensive.

Right click on the object and you get a pie menu. Click Acquire t hen click take. This will put it in your inventory and take it out of the world… and it will refund you the money you paid to put the object in world (the only thing you are not refunded for are taxes paid on a weekly basis for the object). You can also link your objects together to make complex things while lessening the worry that you might misalign it in the future (shift select your objects, then I believe it's ctrl + link to link them together... but I'm not at home atm to make sure). There are beginning building classes that teach this. The beginning building, beginning texturing, and menu classes are all excellent. A plant would more than likely be a combination of textures and objects.. though you can do an object only plant.

There is a beginning scripting class as well… people will also help you out if you have a question on scripts after you learn the basics… everyone is pretty helpful if you ask nicely and listen (for scripting as well as building, texturing, etc)

This can be done as well… I have a few animals that make sounds. (8

You get taxed a minimum of $1 per object in the world. You are not taxed for stuff in your inventory. Land is also taxed, and that is usually where most of your tax $$ will be spent. There are menus that will tell you how much your property and objects cost to have in the world.

Taxes are collected weekly. Go to Edit -> Account History to see your current taxes and if your stipend + bonus will cover them.

Hope this helps… I know others will post things I forgot to mention. IM me if you need anything else or more clarification. (8

Good luck!
