I just wanted to say something to Satch and DNA about their awesome efforts with RCR. I haven't had that much fun playing an in game, game. You gentlemen did a fabulous game, and deserved a much much higher placing in the contest. If it was given to the people to vote, I missed it. Keep on rockin' guys!!! I mean come on after wind.... It must rule to get me to play again! lol

Thanks for the kind words !!!! It means a ton to me!! Yes, I am very disappointed in our ranking in the contest, as I put all my heart into making RCR. The response to RCR has been incredible, and tons of people have had fun playing, that is just as important as to me as winning the game dev contest. Hopefully a bunch more people will play RCR while we still have the land. Go to www.riddlecityransom.com for more info on game play. Thanks again for all who played and supported RCR.

yeah, RCR is such a great game, i just loved the social aspect of it, the builds were amazing and the puzzles fun. it has something for everyone. when i read the results earlier my heart went out to the RCR team, they definetly deserved to be in the top 3, if not first place :)

and to the team, i know its not much but you achieved the most important goal. to make a fun game :)

Thank you all for your kind words. We had a great time building the game and we've had an even better time playing with everyone! When I get back from this conference I'm at, we'll hold another party at the temple!

It's been a really rewarding experience to build a game that brings people together. We've made tons of great new friends, and I know you all have too.

I also think it deserved a much higher rating in the final judging.

Hopefully all is not lost, though.

* Check your in-world IMs, Satchmo.

Thanks, Lovey!!! For people who want to check it out...we also have an active group, Riddle City Samurai, that anyone is free to join. It's a great way to find people to trade with.

Yeah... not to put down the other games in the competition (certainly, Primmies impressed the hell out of me - its shortcomings are the fault of LSL rather than the design) but I just don't see how RCR couldn't have placed higher. OTOH, it was a tough field this year, and the only one I'm kinda "eh" about is EVA, as that sort of game just does not interest me - but I'm sure those who DO go for that think it's great, so I can't complain!

From exploring parts of the grid I've missed to making a whole bunch of new friends, I appreciate all the planning and work that went into RCR. The cooperative effort among players to get through the levels made this even more enjoyable. It wasn't just a game, it was a social event.

You guys thought outside the box and did so many things right. I applaud your effort!

Thank you!!

Great post Cessee! You clearly understand where we were going with Riddle City Ransom . I was really excited to see the Extra Credit Challenge being offered in the original request for proposals because I have long been interested in ubiquitous computing being used as a social platform. Mark Weiser's vision for Ubiquitous computing has actually been achieved for your avatar in Second Life, and with the emergence of what is being called "Web 2.0" or the web being used as a personal publishing and social networking tool, I thought the metaverse was ripe for a gridwide collaborative game that was largely in the hands of the players. I started writing a paper on my plane ride yesterday titled "Social Gaming 2.0", but I can't decide weather to finish it, or to just forget about entertainment and move on to my Serious Games work.

The Internet is in a different place than it was 5 years ago. While it had a brief window in history of being dominated by major corporations and content creators, it has once again shifted back to being a platform about people. Wikipedia, the Open Source Movement , Flickr , Delicious, Podcasting , Backpack , Upcoming , Wikicities , and RSS are great examples of this shift towards sharing and collaborating. Second Life itself is a part of this wave by providing a platform for 3D user created content and self expression. People are enjoying collaboration and there is no reason gaming shouldn't follow suit. Sometimes the "shared experience" of a game is more exciting than a player's fancy new sword with +2 Beastslayer. In fact you can observe this phenomena in other MMOG's when people share the comradery of beating a tough quest, even if they didn't conquer it together. Anyone who has played RCR understands what this means the moment they come back to the Temple after conquering Wind. Watching the shared experience of Riddle City Ransom starting to forge real friendships and social networks made RCR a project more successful than my wildest dreams.

I could go on an on about some of the aspects of RCR that were equally successful. From watching emergent behavior that allowed some players to use RCR as a fun flash mob game, to analyzing the degrees of separation between any two players, there is a lot of interesting stuff going on [maybe I should write that paper].

To conclude, I want to invite everyone who hasn't played to come down to the Shogunate Temple in Obscure (126,26) and start the quest. You need other people to win so bring friends, join the group and/or swing by the Temple when other players are around (usually after 5PM GT). I'm there myself most nights between 4-9. Even when I'm not there, veteran players have taken on a leadership role, are often at the Temple and can help you get started.

How bout we party Saturday night, and everyone is invited!!! The party will start Saturday at 6 PM, and continue until the last AV is standing. Hopefully DNA will be on hand to give us a Psytrance infusion.

Consider this an early warning, with a proper Events announcement to come :)
