Sure! Why the hell not? I am organizing a Vampire the Masquerade game for the near future. It will use the regular White Wolf LARP rules in SL. I'm just checking around to see who might be interested. I'll have a discussion event happening in the next week or so to discuss the game and how it will work. So for now I'm just looking to see who is interested.

I would be interested. I have never done this before, (most probably because there was not anyone else around me to do it with ) but it has always been of interest.

Yes that may be so regarding SimCast
Maybe Digby should rename this thread 'a Vampire the Masquerade roleplay'.

i'd personally love to see d20 rules (or even GURPS) implemented in some way in SL... I play D&D 3.0 rules and occasionally Traveller... all offline and in the traditional dice-rolling way, but I wouldn't mind doing it online in SL IF it was done right! Arti BTW - I use PCGen for generating/modifying my characters... would be VERY cool if I could import that data right into some SL scripted object ehh???

Already implemented in SimCast I referenced the Second Edition and Third Edition V 3.5 rulesets to create the RPG experience known as SimCast.

Prong,
Be really careful. You list yourself as CEO and than say your using 2nd and 3rd edition rules.
As someone who has coded rpg's for a long time now, esp in an online environment, I can tell you from personal experience that WotC take their ownership of DnD and D20 very seriously.
Since you are listing youself as CEO, im assuming you hope to at least break even on your endeavor. WotC is very strict about their copyrights, not even allowing the rules to be used without permission for free to play games.
You might have already contacted them for permission, if so, great, if not, you might consider doing so before you procede development further.
Even if your just using some of each system, its still a derivitive work, and as such, their copyright applies....
Just words of wisdom from someone who has been there, if your playing online with more than a normal 6-8 person weekly gaming group playing over the net instead of over the table, WoTC (and other gaming companies) will want to at least give permission and some will not.

Thanks for the info, I'll have to check out SimCast!
As far as I know, WotC has some kind of development agreement for people wanting to do 3rd party development, kind of like Open Source or something... not really my area of expertise, but all of the d20 books I have have some kind of legalese in the front of the book relating to it.
Peace!
Arti

nod,
D20 is a little looser than 2nd and 3rd edition restrictions, but even the d20 rules have real specifics if you wish to make money or get paid for your product, even if its non-profit, (ie making ends meet).
its good to have a system, its better to write the system from scratch or find one without copyright issues, to avoid such things. of course ones without copyright are normally ones not worth using, hehe.

Thanks for the heads up I may have mistated the use of the reference in haste. Since a RPG is all based on dice rolling and movement across a combat grid, it would be most difficult to recreate that same experience within SL. SimCast, in all appearances, plays like a First Person Shooter (FPS), with a sublayer of RPG elements rolled into one. D&D was not the only reference I have used to create the SimCast experience. I found endless resources on the net like pictures of armor, weapons, and magical items. The equasions used to determine damage, when applied to armor protection, differs greatly from D&D references. Maybe I should stop saying that it resembles a D&D like experience, but then again, every RPG game out there can be classified as D&D like in many ways. My mistake... Thanks again for the helpful advice

Nod, it all boils down to if your trying to create a MMPORG type experience, albiet on a much smaller level, or are you trying to create a over the table type environment using SL as your table.
Sounds like your doign the former, one of my projects after im done with poker, craps, and multiplayer bj, is to do the latter, making an environment that supports folks getting together to play over the table RPG's using SL as the table and scripting support tools (dice, tracking, etc).

Well this started as a call for players and ended up as a discussion about gaming legality. *sigh* at least I know no one's interested in my game idea...

I have been formulating an idea for an active roleplaying sim that slowly incorporates dice etc. but focuses moreso on the interactive story experience. I'm not familiar enough with dnd and frankly I don't like the idea of utilizing someone else's system when creating our own sounds far more entertaining, so if you want my input or anything like that, just ask. Remember, it's my SL -dream- to someday create a roleplaying atmosphere (er, I only say "remember" to those who can think back to times where I've said this, hehe.. I don't see many people in this thread who might remember that, though. )

I've done the coding for that in MUSHes, and we play D&D regularly in that milieu over the internet. If accounts were free, and the hardware specs less restrictive, we'd probably just port the code to SL and play there instead. Shouldn't be hard to do.
