The last house I built relied on the majority of it being chrome. It would have looked pretty cool, except to most people it just looked white and untextured.
I kind of assumed most people had Shiny Objects on since, at least for me, it doesn't seem to suck up as much performance as Local Lighting. But maybe I'm wrong.
What's your story?

Nope - I dont have anything turned on because if you do it kills the game stone stock dead.

I turned it on once long ago to see Maxx's trailer in a sandbox, and now have to see bling hurt my eye on almost every third person in the game.
Maxx and others who use too much chrome should be taxed.

I <3 Shiny! I couldn't do without it, really. The only thing I find disturbing is I have come across a few people who make their PRIM hair or ballgowns shiny. And BOY does that do a number on the overall appearance! I run with avatar detail on full, terrain and object detail at default, and I run with bump map & cloth on, too. My game doesn't perform any worse with these settings than without them, so I figure it's fine. Of course, shadows and local lighting are off - shadows are borked, and local lighting just kills me if it's on. To the point I can't move or do anything. *shrugs* that's just me, though.

I usually scrimp on draw distance when SL's too lagtastic, but shine, I've always had that on. Comes down to a simple matter that if people set an object to shine, then it's intended to be seen that way.
Edit: Err, can't say I've seen the shiny hair yet. Maybe that -is- intentional though.

You can actually use chrome textures, and then enable shine on those. That way it will look good for people with and without shine on.

Shiny is a minimal and possibly nonexistent performance hit for most people with decent video cards. I have a decent video card, so yes.

I *love* the shiny! Unfortunately, I was having massive lag spells that stopped as soon as I turned off shiny... so I am now shinyless

From: Prokofy Neva Maxx and others who use too much chrome should be taxed. Right after the forum word usage tax is implemented. Pay or shut up!

I did have it on, then forgot to turn it on after a reinstall. No I keep forgetting until I'm in world, and no way am I going to risk relogging.

I'm afraid to turn it off. Frankly I don't want to know if it helps! Local lighting, long draw distance, they both hurt bad. But shiny is my indulgence.
