Personally I don't think it's doable in SL, but then I've seen a lot of things here that I never thought possible ;)

(Forgive Uri his spelling errors. Deadlines are a bitch)

As Plauge Tears through WoW, we wonder: Can it happen here?

From: someone
For those of you who are hermetically sealed in your own little game, you may not have heard that there is a plauge tearing through Wow. As discussed on Alice, Clickable Culture, Terra Nova, and elsewhere, the facts as originally reported in Shacknews Forums, are these:
Blizzard adds in a new instance, Zul’Gurub. Inside is the god of blood, Hakkar. Well, when you fight him he has a debuff called Corrputed Blood. It does like 250-350 damage to palyers and affects nearby players. The amazing thing is SOME PLAYERS have brought this disease (and it is a disease) back to the towns, outside of the instance. It starts spreading amongst the genral population including npcs, who can out generate the damage. Some servers have gotten so bad that you can’t go into the major cities without getting the plague (and anyone less than like level 50 nearly immediately die). GM’s even tried quarantining players in certain areas, but the players kept escaping the quarantine and infecting other players.

Talking to some friends of mine who still play WoW, apparently it was very quickly hotfixed by Blizzard, but in the meantime Ironforge (the dwarven city and a major trading hub) was temporarily crippled as anyone level 20 or below would instantly die from this plague.

I don't know of a way, in SL, for anyone to give a disease to anyone else. First of all, if you're in a sim that doesn't allow damage you just won't take any damage. And even if you were, don't you have to attach a prim or otherwise do something to activate a script on your avie?

Wonder how many more games in the future will feature disease plagues that really do kill players. And what alchemists would charge for the innoculations :)

Why, changeable currency, of course.

woah! That almost makes me want to un-cancel my WoW account. That sounds facinating!! I know it is morbid. But still. Stuff like that just makes me ultra curious. :D :o

haha! I love this story!

I suspect a more sinister virus that not only infects your avatars but one that can potentially spread to your RL brains is being conceived in the metaverse :). I hesitate to name this virus for fear of personal safety. I am however ready to provide my extensive expertise in development of a vaccine before it is too late :)

Hahaha! I was actually just thinking the same thing.

As for an SL disease, I can think of a few ways to spread crippling annoyances from player to player without having to attach anything. Nothing damaging in the sense of hit points, of course, since those only exist if you're on land that's combat enabled, but crippling and annoying just the same, so a plague COULD happen. I won't share any of the specifics, so as not to enocurage anyone to actually try it.

Thanks for sharing this, Cindy.

Actually not the first time I've seen something like this. The lesser-known-game-nearly-driven-into-the-ground-by-greed, Horizons, actually tried this gimmick with a "plague" that ran about much of the playerbase.

It was pretty amusing, but in the long run wasn't so bad. Theirs was just a huge debuff to players and some minor damage, and was healed pretty quickly. They also had GMs infect characters and spread the disease, which was pretty funny.

Anywho, it's not really viable in Second Life. The worst you can really do without a resident's consent is have a little illness flag follow them around, make them wear an attachment, or hack the client - all of which would basically be on an opt-in basis.

The reason for this is pretty simple - there are really no persistent "statistics" that affect users beyond their land and inventories - both of which are tightly sealed at Linden Labs and would probably get you sued.

So at the end of the day, it's amusing, but not exactly feasible. Even if they did something like "scurvy" with the latest pirate widget they passed out, it would still generally be opt-in.

As it should be.

This was/is being done in The Matrix Online as well. There are several different viruses that they have unleashed on us as part of the storyline (yes, there is a storyline!)

As for a virus in SL, it would have to be on the opt-in basis, as Jeffrey said. It would be interesting to see the chaos that would bring about when a cool free blingy thing starts mutating...

It would be nice roleplaying to see who'd infect who, as a social experiment or somesuch thing.

Of course, in SL, there are so many permissions asked when something is gonna take control of ya...

Wonder when we'll see the day when virii (viruses?) cross over from cyberworld (gawd what an antiquated yet cute term!) to offline.

While I was sitting there thinking "that completely sucks", some of my WoW friends were saying "oh no, it was fun!" (Of course they're level 60, so insta-death from an unseen disease wasn't an issue for them)

As Alan points out, it's already been done. Bling was a particularly nasty, highly contagious infection that has permeated the entire world.

Maybe it's more of a Dawkinsian "meme" thing. Like Tringo, that other plague on SL :)

Haha!! That was the first thing I thought, too!! My human priest is 57 so I probably wouldn't do too bad. Still interesting to watch / experience!

Sickness viruses are absolutely possible in SL.

I've been going over it in my head, and using some slightly modified code in my inventory, I could make an object that acts frighteningly close to the common cold.

I was thinking of unleashing it with an alt, then demanding money for the "cure", then giving all the money to charity. :D

But, I'd probably get banned.

In SL, it would probably be an STD...

If someome devises a way to hijack the JPEG2000 format that might be a possibility. Images have been known to be hijacked so it's possible. This could threathen both the server and client side if protection was not yet available for this outbreak. Also, if someone was clever enough they could put binaries online that say "enhance the second life client" when in turn it actually hijacks your username and password. Ouch.

As for in-world, the only thing I could think of for now would be the hijack of the money system. Someone was clever enough to alter their second life clients I suppose something could be created to circumvent the money system as what has happened with permissions/ownership.

People use OpenGL interceptors to look into things they shouldn't be but hey. The internet is such a wonderful place isn't it? YAY!

Not the kind of metaverse virus you folks are referring to but it's something.

Just thinking out loud is all...

Yes Weedy, the lonely and pathic losers read the Herald.

As for the disease....it IS actually possible but would only last in one server, i cannot see something following you from zone to zoen, cause if you think about it, Sedaiku flamethrower made flames that follow your AV, then dissipate after 45 secs, but f you touched another person, u could give the flames to others, and reinfect yourslef, water was always the cure to this but oh well

I would so buy you a new account. We need another zombie incident, but with slightly better controls, more opt-in without ruining the whole point, and maybe Linden sanctioned. And we need a sense of humor. :o
