Inland Waterway Voyage

Recently I had the opportunity to sail the inland waterways on the African Queen II piloted by the intrepid Catelynn Wallce and let me tell you we had a blast. Starting out from my Cypa island we generally headed west and I lost count of how many sims we traversed. I admit that I had no idea such a vast waterway existed and, seeing it from the African Queen, which only goes about 1 knot, was a perfect way to see things.

We only got hung up on a sandbar once (it was my job to push us off) and the water was only blocked a few times by overly nervous land owners with their restricted land. I actually even saw a few nice places with trees though the entire waterway was overdevelped to the point of absurdity.

If you have a few hours to kill I highly recommend you get a slow boat and take a little trip through the waterways. It beats blingo and zingo any day!

I have travelled through hundreds of sims using the waterways, and I have to agree. My travels have been underwater, however, using my Marlin DPV (Diver Propulsion Vehicle). Its an interesting perspective, for sure...

It is true, however, that you have no idea how extensive the waterways in Second Life are until you start using boats and/or submersibles.

Boating is a blast in SL, I agree. =)

Boats are a great method of transportation. The waterways around SL are pretty expansive and can be relaxing to do.

I believe there is a Sailors group, or there was, that not only protected the waterways but did some fun trips and other stuff I don't know about. :P

I DON'T suggest walking around the world. As you'll go insane and start rambling about things no one understands. Proof examples: Hamlet Linden, Cubey Terra, Me.

I wish that, with the coming of the next generation of SL servers, most of the mainland becomes entirely surrounded by ocean sims, so that we can start building ports on the mainland coast and have regular lines between them :D

Yep, travelling by boat is the bee's knees. My computer/connection/whatever is too laggy for planes or cars, and there is so much scenic waterway to be explored.

That would be awsome. Something long wished for. :)

Travelling by sub is cool too, b/c you get to see underwater builds that you normally miss.

Have there been deeper seas made for subs? I haven't been keeping track of that, but I remember people requesting LL make some deeper terrain for more submarine trips.

I might want to add that my next trip will be with my scuba diving equipment. I plan on having some friends station themselves along the way with extra tanks of air. :p

And one more thing. I purposedly bumped this thread to see something other than the MJW, MSW, MJB or whatever it is that everyone is babbling about. Can we just all get along and talk about fun stuff instead of the Deeper Meaning of Second Life?

Please don't add to this thread unless you have something fun to say.

*bump*

Sorry Susie, I can't think of anything funny right now :/ But I'm thinking of making a proposal for ocean coastal sims, if the proposal system was not completely useless.

I'd like to see more seadocks in SL, harbors, ports, all that sort of thing... I've come across a trio of exceptional pirate ships in SL recently and wish there were more, and of course, wish vessels with like 100 prims could actually be vehicles. Wish we could load 'em up with a whole crew, and working cannons, and melee sword fights and splashing waters and crocodiles and barrels rolling and simulated damage and have some really great naval battles.

Oz, there was one pretty deep trench I remember Bino and I came across in the southeast... it was shaped artificially with right angles. Not sure if it's still that way since it was fresh on the map, but Bino got into a diving suit to check it out. :)

It's doable :) In fact I think there's a team out there in SL that was trying to do exactly that, a game called "Burning Sea".

Yesterday I finally gave the Tako a try and sailed from Brauni to the ANWR oil rig. Considering I have absolutely no sailing experience iRL or iSL, the Tako was surprisingly easy to handle, and I even managed to get speeds over 3m/s in some places. :) My navigator joined the trip later (I can't remember in which sim), so until then I had to sail without map and got lost a bit. We ran upon sand banks twice. It was a very relaxing and pleasant voyage, and I will visit the old continent by Tako next.

Just as a note of interest, in this inland lake the return time has been upped to 60 min, and parts of the island in baffin have been set to build, allowing non land owners a place to launch. Return time on the island seems to be 60 minutes as well, except in the lagoon area, which is set to 5 minutes.

Excellent. I'd love to see someone draw an explorer's map (or just a screenshot of the grid map with a nice phat red line drawn in paint) of waterway voyages. Or maybe I could just ride along!

There is some deep water in the south-east end of the mainland, down to almost 80 meters.

The water in Horseshoe is around 60 meters deep... Stop by Marlin Engineering HQ and rez a test drive DPV, and explore the waterway at the north end of the sim.

Since my old land consisted of a beach, dive shack, surfing waves and rather large inhabited coral reef; its safe to assume Ive always been fascinated by the waterways of SL.

Currently Im living in the Philippines where dont have good enough connection to enjoy SL except thru the forums :( Im curious if things have improved when comes to crossing sim lines on a boat? I used to have a ball taking friends on multi-sim jetski rides, but was always a drag to have to re-rez and reattach our ride after entered a new sim. My mind is already forming a new project for when return...

Excellent!

That would be awesome - as well as some marine maps of SL.

Awsome! Glad to hear there is some deeper waters!

And yes a map would be cool of "Safe Waters" to travel and cool Harbors. :D

Sadly I don't believe so. I think crossing sim lines is pretty much the same and not too improved.

Sorry to hear about your SL-loss :( Hope you can return sometime soon!
