You feel their appearence truly is a good job, their behavior really is up to standards, their build is a great piece of work...?
Or do you do it to be nice?
When your standing in noob area, and all the noobs rate you, do you rate back? without even talking to them?
Personally, I rate honestly, if your ugly, no rate, if you trash talk, no rate, if you never built, or only can make a square and call it home, no rate.
What all do you do on this? leader boards are full of people that don't deserve to be on there......

Too many default'ed looking AV's on leader boards, come on people. Too many square boxes making more votes then a beautiful home. It's all popularity, its not being truthfull.

I rate based on my personal opinion of the actual attributes being rated.
However, I think I'm in the minority on that one.

I rate with my heart. Although I give out a good behaviour ratings to the most people....cause most people are nice. Building and AV on the other hand is harder to get from me, it doesnt have to be top off the line but better then noobie standard AV and as you said plain boxes.
p.s. Leaderboard status is totally irrelevant to me and rating is only money. Why be on a leaderboard in a game without a goal. I have never understodd why the leaderboards exists at all. d.s

I usually rate behaviour after chatting with the person for a while, or seeing how they act at events.
I rate appearance if they went out of their way to not use a default/random avatar and it doesn't look like crap.
The building I rate for both building and scripting. If I have seen your builds/scripts and they are impressive then I rate it.

I rate honesly too... pretty much everyone I meet gets a positive behaviour rating from me as I've only met two people who didnt deserve it (and they were both noobs that I would class as griefers if they had signed up).
I'm with Thor - the leaderboards aint why I'm in this game. In fact, score rarely counts for me on ANY game... it's the fun and experience I'm after.
I'm sure that the leaderboards are important to other residents, as that is part of the experience they are after.
That's the great thing about SL... different people can get different things from the game!

No Im not mainly refering to leader boards, but don't ratings effect bonus stipend? if so why give it to people that don't deserve it?

I rate based on the person and what I know... Most people are cool so I’m most free with attitude rates. As far as appearance, who on the leader board has a default av? I see no "Ruths" there. Appearance is so subjective. One person may think an av is cool where less is more while others think it’s cool if you have a bunch off attachments. It’s not really beneficial to argue aesthetic rates since everyone has their own perceptions.

I rate on if i know the person or have talked to them. For behaviour, if they are nice i do. For building, i actively search out new builds to see what everyone is building. Same for appearance. Its rare that i rate someone in all three categories upon first meeting them.

So basically Zoey, you are saying all the ratings you see that you disagree with or are not satisfied with, including but not limited to the leader boards, are wrong and the people who spent their time and money rating are incorrect in their evaluation of that rate?

I'm not sure why it matters what system we use to rate people. Every individual is going to be different on that score and that's that. I'm not going to get into a discussion about the value of the leaderboards because I feel like I haven't really been in the world long enough to have a strong opinion about their success or lack thereof. The fact is, the ratings are part of the game and that's the system. So we deal with it. There's no way to regulate one way or another how someone rates or why.
I rate on behavior. If someone says hello, is generally polite and offers a card upon meeting and speaking to me, I generally rate them good behavior. If I really like the way they look, I rate on appearance too. Sometimes I go back and rate on behavior or appearance if someone proves a negative first impression wrong or comes up with a very cool Av I haven't seen before. I rate people on building basically if I've seen their work and I think they've done a good job -- which is all entirely subjective. My opinion about what makes a good build is going to be totally different from others because my background, likes, etc. are different from others.
I know well that not everyone is going to like my Av or me personally, I also know that I'm not a great builder though I am slowly learning. So I don't worry about it much. If someone rates me I generally try to thank them personally (even if I don't know if it's good or bad). It's just common courtesy in my opinion to thank a person for taking the time to state their opinion and spend their cash. No matter what that opinion is specifically.

chasing midnight, i think zoey might have been wondering why people like me give out plus rating the first time I meet u... I do it 'cause its fun to rate people, and might make someone happy I'll quickly turn it into a negative rating if they bug me later but so far it hasn't happened. (oh, and in a way I'm kind of trolling for people to return the favour and rate me back. Works maybe 1 in 10 people?) A lot of people rated me at a show and tell event. I have to say that was more productive than randomly giving away ratings.

From: someone i rate everyone i see. just to be nice. i even rate the newbs even though they might not sign up to be a member. it only costs a buck. Big misconseption there. It does not only cost you a buck. It effects you position on the High Score leader board and thus your bonus stipend. You pay that $1 once, but you pay for that good rating as long as they are in the game because of how ratings work. From: someone (oh, and in a way I'm kind of trolling for people to return the favour and rate me back. Works maybe 1 in 10 people?) Ya you are really losing money with this method and this return on investment. If you rate someone and they rate you back you both win, if you rate someone and they don't rate you back, they win and you lose. If you look on the economy boards the payout is decided by totalling up all the rating points given, then seeing what percentage of all rating points in the game are yours. You get that percentage of the "pot". The more total ratings that aren't yours, the lower you stipend. What gets me are the people in the tax revolt or whatever nonsense it is that still rate everyone they meet on sight, and wonder why taxes keep going down. And yes, in case you hadn't gathered, I rate based on what I see.

As far as the voting thing on builds, I fly around every day, stopping off at all the places I like, and looking at all the new things, and vote as I go. I don't only vote on the big, impressive builds, I also vote on stuff made by people who aren't quite .. let's say 'artistic' .. as others if it looks like they're really trying. As far as ratings, I rate all the time, but not just because someone rated me. I've kind've gotten into the habit of doing the majority of my ratings on Sunday while I still have money. I go down the list of calling cards, casting votes on the people who really stand out in my memory.

In my first few months of SL, I rated all the time. Not "build" so much, but appearance and behavior. As my time has passed in SL, I rate lass and less. I'm not sure why...
I've never really thanked people when they've rated me (I know it's not nice), but I assumed that if they rated me, then I deserved it in their eyes, and no thanks was neccessary. That sounds awfully self important, but honestly I don't think it is. I must admit, however, some of my recieved ratings, I don't think I deserve. My build is in the mid ninties, and, right now, I only have one small build IW, that I'm sure few even notice. I've never really built anything "impressive." At least, not in my eyes. I probably wouldn't pos rate my builds. Hmmm... I seem to have gone off on a tengent.
Basically, if you get my rating now, either you're someone I've known and forgot to rate (it happens a lot) or you've REALLY impressed me or had some sort of impact on me. I caught myself rating yesterday, and I had to look for "rate" on the pie menu. That might be related to my long haitus though... oh well.

I almost never rated people.
Unless it's negative. I like rating people negative.

Ratings

I rate almost everybody on appearance, the only way a person will get a bad rating from me on that os if they wear something offensive, or nothing at all in a PG sim. I do not immediately rate on behavior. I wait to observe their actions, and eventually they will probably get a good rating from me. I only rate on building for what i believe are good builds.

If someone rates me out of nowhere and I am feeling charitable I will give them a positive rating on whatever I've seen. Usually this is just appearance, I leave the other two neutral. If the person actually bothered to talk to me for more than 3 seconds, I give them positive behavior. If they have a killer attachment, or I've seen their builds elsewhere, they get a + there too.
But usually if it's the usual swap-cards-and-ratings routine without any attempt at even saying hello, I usually decline the card and don't rate. It's tacky, it resembles all the mindless levelling from RPGs, and it results in yet another series of "x is online / x is offline" messages that I don't need.
I swap cards with Lindens, mentors, people who buy stuff from me, other Kazenojin, and with the few people I talk to in-world. I really can't see a reason to swap with anyone else. The bonus increase isn't a big enough carrot for me to ignore the mindless RPG-ness of it all.
