Hey thanks Bob.
I actually have a couple of questions, if that is ok.
1 I don't know why but it seems like that in world I still seem to walk and get around kind of slow.
I think that I have the settings right.
If not what should I look for?

2 I don't seem to ancounter many people and have not really found any places where people hang out.

2 Am I supposed to be able to click on places on the map?
Otherwise is there like a page or something that lets you know where people or anything else is.

I know about the little map and that you can click on the little blocks to go to places but that does not do any good if you don't know where the heck it is you want to go.

I spent about 2 frustrating hours trying to find my way around with no one in sight to help me out.

Unless I figure some stuff out, I don't think I'm going to like it.
But I will stay on until before my next billing date and if I don't like it buy october I probably won't stay on.

ps I'm usually don't so puzzled about online worlds.
I have tried probably most if not all.
So far I like There but I don't want to keep spending so much money for it like I have been like $50 a month.
That needs to STOP don't you think? LOL

Well Mona, i think it all depends on what time you jump on. The game is based around PST, which is about 3 hours behind where I am. There are people on at all hours of the night usually, if you fly around and see a white dot on your map, that's a person. You can't click on the map itself and get sent someplace though, you either have to fly there, or if you have a landmark, you can teleport. It takes some getting used to as the land is so huge, but if you just fly around and explore, you can have some fun and learn the lay of the land, it gets a lot easier to navigate and find where it is you want to go. A few suggestions about what to see:

Blue: the Americana Sim. It's a themed sim where the residents have made the sim look like America. They have a city hall, a replica of Fenway Park, a replica of the Mann's Chinese theatre and are building a hollywood studio. They also have the St. Louis arch and the Washington Monument (they are still working on their sewage system, so don't mind the smell).

Mauve: right behind blue, some of the residents there are making it a nature sim. Really peaceful. Check out my Log Cabin (shameless plug) and we also have Sia's world famous windmill and she setting up her dock. That's one sim that you won't want to miss when we are done.

Shipley: A mature sim where building is king. A lot of cool builds out there, including Catherine Omega's place (truly a sight to see) and Pituca Chang's builds. Look for them in the far corner of Shipley. While you out there, you might as well check out other builds in the land dubbed the Outlands. Federal holds Oneironaut's carnival.

All you have to do is open up the world map, and once it loads up (takes a while for mine to come up) fly towards any of the sims you want to visit.

Hopes that helps some, and hope to see you in world.

Hi Mona!

Glad to see you at least got in!

If the game seems to run slow, it could be a couple of main issues right off the bat.

First, system memory. If you have less then 512MB RAM, you probably want to think of upgrading. I mean heck, 1GB RAM sticks right now are running at $89 so it's not the expensive :)

Second, your graphics card. Don't downplay this in any machine you use for gaming. More and more developers are utilizing the high-end capabilities found in todays extreme graphic cards, and supposedly in version 1.1 due to be released this month, Second Life will be no exception to this rule. I know people will cringe when I say this, but if you have the funds available, I would go with the high end Nvidia card. Not just to play SL, but to play any online game. The marked improvement you will see all around is more then worth it. Yes, the high-end cards are a bit expensive, but if you are a hard-core gamer (like myself) then you won't be bothered by this :)

Third, in the game, you might want to go into EDIT, PREFERENCES, DISPLAY, and then lower the settings in there. Settings too high can max a graphic card that isn't high-end. Therefore, lower some of those settings and see how things go.

Anytime you are in the game, the best way to find out about what's going on, is to check the event board in the Getting Started area. Also, you can contact any LINDEN in game and ask them for a copy of today's events card.

Personally I think LL should make a function for thier admins and send out this notecard on a daily basis, or just automatically deposit it into our notecard folder. Another way would be to have an automated system, much like the Message of the Day, and load the current events for the day into that, where people can access it from anywhere they are.

Either way, that's how to find out about what's going on and where. Also, there are places that people naturally gravitate towards. Probably one of my most favorite is JOAN'S in Kissling. It's a great atmosphere and a wonderful surrounding, and I can't think of two better people to be host to an afternoon of fun. Of course, you can always look me up, and if I'm in-game, I would be happy to entertain you at the Cabin in slate. It's a nice quiet part of the world where we can just sit and relax and I can answer any further questions you might have.

No matter what you do though, remember to have fun!

Mona- first off welcome to SL. I don't think you will be disappointed. I think bob's hardware advice is right on and as far as meeting folks...yes it is a big world and at times seems empty but there are usually right now over 100 people online at anyone time even in the later hours. I am very familiar with 9 -midnigt time (pacific) period as that is when I am in world mostly and we have been consistantly around that 100 online member number. Bob is right about attending events as a good way to meet folks and going to classes as well. The one thing about Sl - people are doing lots of things and learning lots of things both in world and out. So alot of builders and scripters - clothes makers (textures) are busy either scripting or building or making that perfect outfit for Saturday night and dont get out to socialize as much as they would like. And if the numbers may seem small to you ....the smaller quantity is made up by the quality of people here. You will find that in the end it is the people here that really makes SL shine. And if you need any assistance or just want to chat please feel free to vist anytime I am in world. Again...welcome.
