If you think you're gonna get an honest answer here, you're dead wrong. GOOD designers have every incentive to make you think there's no money in design .... less competition for them.

Bad designers will simply lie to make their stores appear more popluar than they actually are.

You're getting bad info from both sides. LoL.

You're dead wrong. Designers are generally cordial and friendly with each other and are very willing to help each other out. Where did you get that idea?

Many designers have posted tutorials and templates to help new designers out. Chip Midnight has a store which features new designers.

As for the poll, I don't make much money... but that will change when I get more stuff out and get more active :)

Well, I can speak for myself and say that I am honest. I do not charge an arm and a leg for my designs, therefore I do not make much money. I also factor in that I am a total amatuer, do not rip off Poser files, have bad/unique taste, do not have a lot of friends, and avoid photosourcing.
My best advice is to gather a lot of connections and friends you're more likely to earn more money. Post in the classified forums once in awhile, but do not double/cross post.

Tito's Invisible Designs, Inc.

You may have observed my uberfashionable designs if you frequent the strip clubs or nude resorts in SL.

I decided to withhold earnings disclosure as to not invite attacks from anti-business types or copy-cat designers.

Smart move. In other words, you're pulling in the money hand-over-fist. :-)

Okay, I'm not going to disclose what I make here either but it's all over the board for me, really it depends on how often you do new things. As far as "make lots of friends and connections" that doesn't work with me. My friends get my clothing free lol and I've been here for 2 years and am just now where I have a "name" among designers in SL. I started out selling where I could with a small amount of clothing, back in the stone age when we needed money for taxes :P. Over time I grew as my skills grew and so did the amount of people that liked my clothing or knew about it. It's a bit more difficult now because there's a large amount of clothing designers and yes there seems to be a couple of particular styles that get the most sales. I won't ever stray away from my fashion style whether it's what sells or not but I will always challenge myself. Whatever you decided to do, good luck :)

Nothing at all, one because nothing I make is currently being sold, and two because everything I did make is currently open source.

For starters, ask your friends. This is where having friends helps out a lot, they may know places where you can put your work up for sale or may even have a mall or some land you could rent from them reasonably or free. Generally people gravitate to similar people and it is likely you will have a few creative friends, it might benefit you to pool together and create a little mall of your own.
I did not refer to friends buying your work, they help to provide feedback and may alleviate the task of trying to make it on your own. If you are alone you are less likely to gain acceptance from customers. Or so that is my experience. I am suggesting some things that I did that seemed to work for me and suggesting others that are opposite from what I do/did that would probably be more beneficial to do.
If this doesn't work, look for malls or clubs and rent from them. They charge a lot, but it does get your work more visable.

I might also add that income does vary, depending on when you put up new items, how often, and the day. I can make up 5k on a rare occasion on Tuesdays when people get their stipends and if I have a decent amount of new items on sale. But on a regular basis, 5 days of the week, it's not more than 500.

I'm guessing that The Sex Girl's Shop brings in between 500 and 1000 a day but I'm not real sure since my co-owner, Melissa King, gets half of the profits and our employees split the rest. Somehow I got left out of the money loop but I guess it's because I don't do a lick of work. :)
