I think this is a great policy proposal for Jesse and Rausch.
However, while this proposal may be fun for some, I'd prefer that we took a proactive approach to grief rather than a reactive one.
We need tools that allow us to prevent grief before it happens. Not escalation of the griefer war by sanctioning retaliation.
Say Bill comes to my trivia event and shoots Bob. Bob uses this policy to retaliate against Bill - but Bob is a poor shot, and inadvertently shoots Judy. Judy, feeling wronged - uses this policy to shoot back at Bob - but she sucks at shooting too, and knocks Fred out of the sim. Fred, in his fury, flies back and fires off a C4 to get back at Judy, affecting everyone within range. Imagine the drama. So much for Trivia.
I think better land parcel tools to prevent common forms of grief before they happen would be the most constructive way of nullifying the need for security scripts, and allow those who want peace to have it.

The only tools that can enable this is a loss of freedom. And SL is all about freedom and the internet way... thats why I say screw gun control... because if we try too hard to prevent griefing, we'll only end up imprisoning ourselves.

Explain how giving me the ability to block push scripts on MY parcel is a loss of freedom. Explain how giving me the ability to block sound effects on MY parcel is a loss of freedom. Explain how giving me the tools to better determine who did what on MY parcel so I can file an abuse report is a loss of freedom. Jamie - this suggestion gives us MORE freedom, not less. Are you suggesting the entire grid becomes a combat sim? I'm sorry, I thought I signed up for Second Life, not Halo.

I am not asking to give me the tools to decide what goes on on your land. I am asking for the tools so that each of us can decide for ourselves, what it permissable on our own parcels.
By Parcels, I mean non-flight path, non-common areas of parcels. Say below 100m.
If I'd like to be 'imprisioned' (read: safe) on my own property, should I not have that right?
Or would you prefer to take that freedom away from me?
Freedom is the ability to live my second life how I choose. Freedom is NOT a greifer deciding how I'm going to live my second life for me.

*stops reading thread to remark to Travis* Travis, this is interesting that you bring this up. You make an excellent point. It's been so long since griefing messed up my game shows in TSO, I had forgotten it happened. But what happened was, people were able to go enemy link someone, then leave before it could happen back. Now, a lot didn't care about the enemy link, but most hated it happening and were scared of it; it would cost you things, like a level in your job. And the griefers could do it quick then make themselves immune to being enemy-linked themselves, or even commented on in their friendship web, forevermore, which added insult to injury. I remember now that we would be immersed in a game show, and by immersed, I DO MEAN immersed. It was very, very real, and I think that is one reason why people enjoyed it so much. I mean, it was real to me, too, even! So there we were, say fifteen people, all immersed in this game show, when all of a sudden some griefer came in to enemy link everyone in sight. "OMG!" someone would yell. "He's enemy-linking!" The spell was broken. It would take me some time to identify, boot and ban the griefer (thank goodness we could do that a lot easier and more effectively than you can here), and then get back into the game show mood and mode. Fortunately, it usually didn't take too long for everyone to get immersed again, but it was still bad. The reason I had forgotten about this was they made it impossible to enemy link people like that. That made me very happy, because it meant my shows would no longer be disrupted by someone coming in doing the equivalent of shooting people. They could still come in and be a jerk, but that's no big deal, I could always handle jerks and hecklers very well, turning them into part of the entertainment, and usually without even booting them, lol, so that was no problem. After that, we never had a problem again. So I'd forgotten those enemy link days, but you've reminded me, now, how ghastly it is to have someone ruin your event like that. Many of those who did it quit TSO when enemy-linking was taken out of the game and came to SL. So you are right - the retaliation idea pretty much leads to your show being turned into a war instead. I used to REALLY REALLY resent it when some turkey would decide that no, we weren't going to do our carefully-crafted show; he was going to come onto our property instead and start doing HIS show. That used to drive me crazy. That someone could take the game we were playing, and turn it into his game - his own game, with unwilling players. The same thing could happen here, but even worse, since there's not an effective way of keeping people out of your property, and I've seen people end up having to call a Linden Also interesting, I remember at the time, people who didn't do events like ours just couldn't figure out why we hated that enemy linking so much, and thought they were throwing out the baby with the bath water when they got rid of it, as it got rid of some role play possibilities. Most, though, were glad it was gone, including me. I tell ya what, Travis, I often think - there are those who do shows and there are those who don't, and the non-entertainers, I really don't think they have a clue, sometimes, as to what entertainers do, or need, or anything. They have no idea what it takes. (Yeah, call me divisive for observing that, you thin-skinned turkeys who called me divisive in that other thread.) coco

Hell no. This is SL, not Halo. LoL. Jamie, from your responses, it seems to me that you're not actually reading what anyone has to say on the subject, and just posting quick 'slogans' that strike your fancy. Ok, say we had no restrictions on the use of firearms or any other weapon in self-defence? What would be the difference then between a combat sim, and a non-combat sim? If you're doing more than just posting slogans, please - by all means, prove me wrong, and give me your educated view on why removing restrictions on weapon usage would NOT turn the grid into a combat zone. I'm really interested to hear your logic on this.

Just because weapons are ALLOWED does not instantly turn any sim into a combat zone. As someone said earlier, the fear of grief is many time actual incidence.
Eliminating weapons would impugn on scripter's abilities to create objects - and would lead to a general restriction of freedome for EVERYONE, not just the grifers themselves.
I'm not just posting slogans, dead serious about the fact that restricting guns will spill over into the loss of freedoms of all SL'ers. And I'm all about freedom.

I'm not just posting slogans, dead serious about the fact that restricting guns will spill over into the loss of freedoms of all SL'ers. And I'm all about freedom. I'm all about freedom too, until two freedoms directly conflict with one another. I don't think anyone (at least me) is advocating getting rid of guns. But I don't think someone should be allowed to shoot someone for any reason. Self defence or no. You could use the same logic to make the argument that I should be able to drive 120 MPH through a residential subdivision. In one sense, its a violation of my freedom by having my speed limit restricted. But - if giving me that freedom violates the safety of those around me, one has got to trump the other. There's cases where things wont work both ways. Regardless - I strongly, strongly disagree with you... but I don't mean to oppress your opinion. If you want to call the sky green, its your right to do so Thanks for the further detail!
