I had the afternoon off and was over South of Market, so I called LL and asked if I could stop by for a visit. I spent about two hours there and got to meet a lot of great people. It was really nice to get to talk to people I'd only chatted with in-world or in forums. Shouts out to Ramsey, Reuben, Kona, Richard, Jeff, Lee, Ben, Bub, Robin and Andrew! (sorry if I missed anyone) It was a bit odd having everyone call me Olmy in RL, but I got used to it soon enough. It was really gratifying that out of a world of 25,000 residents more than a few Lindens recognized me right away and knew who I was. Oh yeah, Jeff is really cool and doesn't look nearly as inhuman as I expected.

I've got to say that meeting the folks behind Second Life in person gives a really different impression than the forums or even talking in-world. People there are very engaged in making things work well, and everyone I met was interested in what I as a resident thought about things. Here's the best part: I had filed a bug about grid snapping and how it's non-intuitive the way it works in 1.6. (Grid is killing me) I was showing Kona what I meant, and Richard came over and I showed him. An hour later Richard came and got me and showed me he'd fixed it to work the way I had suggested and OMG it was so much better! (I think this speaks to how difficult it can be trying to communicate feedback about an interactive UI through bug reports and forum postings. Maybe LL should do more live user testing - I'm sure many residents would be happy to participate.) Talk about customer focus! Richard gets a triple rate from me and all my alts for that!

I even got to chat with Andrew for a bit, and he mentioned a few things about future development that should make everyone who wants an API very happy. Oh yeah, everyone there had a printout of the feature voting list. They are taking it quite seriously. Guess what Andrew's #1 priority is now?

Robin gave me a t-shirt, and I signed the whiteboard right next to my soon-to-be neighbor Pituca Chang. And I didn't even get a parking ticket!

The fact that they seem happy to devote time and attention to visitors tells me these are good guys (and gals) who sincerly like and value their residents.
WTG LL :)

I am glad you finally made it over to the offices Olmy! I remember how great is was when Garth and I visited them last October (see link below). The Lindens are a great group of people. Hehe,,,, and another name for the whiteboard collection.

Garth and I hope to get back to see them all next September, when the Londoner comes to visit me again.

Hmmm...I'm thinking I need to book a flight to California and spend thousands of dollars to visit these people and show them what a pain in the ass some of the crappy group land tools are LOL.

Despite some of the weird replies in the forum it sounds like you had fun. Do they really welcome visits from peons like us?

They're no frills, not no safety. ;)

They're the best airline in the country, IMO (and in the opinion of those that take all the airline passanger satisfaction surveys from the FAA and whatnot.)

There was a big whiteboard there by the door full of names signed by people who had dropped in for a visit. Just call ahead to make sure there's someone to show you around.
