I have been playing with this for many hours since a friend showed it to me last week. I am addicted. It's a light download and super easy to use. Its a 3-d globe that combines satellite imagery, maps, and Google's search tools. I can not begin to express how awesome this is, go check it out. http://earth.google.com/ edit: Make sure to play with the tilt function esp. in mountainous regions. Also zoom in on most major cities and an actual 3-d representation of the buildings is there.

Very cool. How did you get that overlay on the building heights in SF? I just downloaded it and I havent figured out all the tools yet.
*edit. Nevermind, I found it, 3D buildings, duh.

Wow! This is amazing. Funny -- I used to live about five miles from Schreiver AFB (strategic air command). Must be in part of a blackout zone, because you can't zoom in for miles around SAFB.

My truck is plainly visible parked in front of my place.
Its very cool to see other cities around the world, most maps I have seen until now never show that data.

Yeah, I love Google Earth! I've been messing with it for days. Is neat that you can use the legacy database for alternate high-rez areas (my home is not high-rez yet on the primary server, but is in the legacy) AND you can also choose to view the globe with Mars Global Surveyor data mapped onto it! To choose the different servers, use File > Logout and then File > Login and pick the alternate server. -Ghoti

If you dig that you should also check out Nasa's World Wind. It's a lot of fun to play with. It focuses on natural phenomenon rather than maps. It's very cool! http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/
