After working on our project outside of SL for several months, I returned last night for the first time (in several SL versions) to do some dedicated building in world. My goal was to rip apart one of my Fachwerks, reassemble it perfectly, and add new textures. I had created seven texture variations of my original Fachwerk and needed to skin the rebuild structure seven times over. Needless to say I was looking forward to quite a lot of work but instead I was amazed. The improvements to SL's build interface are phenomenal! The features that impressed me most were: - A check box to work on individual prims in a linked group.
- Plane tabs that allowed movement within a single plane snapped to a customizable grid.
- A search function for the inventory.
- An "apply immediately" check box for textures and colors.
Granted I had heard of these before in the release notes, however I had no idea what a positive impact they would have on my building productivity. I was able to rebuild and skin seven complex fachwerks in a single evening. I simply selected the "individual prim" check box, kept open the texture and color windows with "apply immediately" selected, and used the search feature to instantly pull up every texture I needed. WOW! I did all the buildings in a fraction of the time it would've taken me back in the day. Thanks LL! ~Ulrika~

WB Ulrika!
Yes, I agree the new tools *rock*. I have made a suggestion though:
I would like the ability to override the default permsissions - most likely administered through the Preferences panel.

Agreed. I'm in love with the new tools. Modeless switching between snap-to-grid and arbitrary is great as is the addition of grid-snap for dragging sides. MMmm. Rulers.

ahh the new build thingies suck, they have SO many inconveniences in them still, chief of which is your av having to be in the picture, the free drag and select individual prim things being removed, plus all those lines in your face. but...we know what you're up to, UZ...this just in... www.secondlifeherald.comFrom: someone Linden Lab’s Government: Under Neu Orders Filed under: miscellaneous Gossip and Drama Mafias, Gangs, and Virtual Governments— Neal Stewart @ 10:09 am

Be wary of editing linked parts. You can do it, but it's unreliable and can mess up your entire build. Especially rotations.

Having to have your AV in the picture? Please elaborate. From: Prokofy Neva the free drag It's still there. From: Prokofy Neva select individual prim things being removed Still there, but expanded to allow you to edit an individual prim while it is linked to others. From: Prokofy Neva plus all those lines in your face. Isn't there an option to turn these off? If not, there should be. I find them very helpful, but others may not.

Yeah, I have to say that the new building tools are really great... I feel like such an ass for being all "bomfgwtfbbq" when 1.6 came out. LF

Besides a few bugs like when you're doing small prim building and you're zoomed way in, moving an object will make your camera shoot forward into the build so you can't see what you're doing, the new stuff is pretty nice. I really like the edit linked parts, lets me make minimal changes quickly.
You mentioned you can still do free drag but I haven't quite figured that one out yet? Seems it just box selects now the way I did it before. So how does it work now?

I have been begging for free dragging to be returned. If it's available, I would love to know how?

I really like the edit linked parts, lets me make minimal changes quickly. i tried the ctrl-0 (zero) approach and it does control the zoomed-in-camera problem somewhat. I think ctrl-9 gets you out of that mode. I also like the new build tools, although have found myself needing to be very aware of whether i have "edit linked prims" ON or OFF

I think the edit linked option is the best f*cking thing since sliced bread.
It has a few quirks that still need to be ironed out - but out of the additions to the build tools since 1.2 - this one, and the new texture selection (being able to FINALLY organise textures for building) are my favorites.
Siggy.
