Hi, The movie thread made me think of this... How about posting science fiction titles that you think are like second life? need not be *exactly* second life just relevant themes. A recent one for me is: "Kiln People" by the (sometimes unreadable) David Brin and an older, even more relevant one... "Riding the Torch" by (the excellent and relatively unknown) Norman Spinrad I won't go on about the whys of my selection until I see if anyone is interested. Dianne

I saw a similar thread sometime back and there were a lot of good books mentioned. The Otherland series by Tad Williams.....I haven't read that in years, but after I finish the ones I'm working on I will have to read them again. Ever since comming to SL I wanted to revist those novels

I'd have to give this one a go... "And He Built A Crooked House" by Robert A. Heinlein.

That's the one with the teseract isn't it? Great story. My favorite story with a tesseract is "Wrinkle in Time" by Madeline D'Engle Not much else she wrote is good IMO though.

Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy of course. what other sci fi is as goofy and weird and lame and full of contradictions and horrible people and confused people just like SL? i can see it know...... "You mean they spend your nights watching a tiny model of themselves dance in a tiny model of a night club?" "Well, yes, but--" "Why don't they just go to a real night club?" "It's not that simple, see--" "At least they aren't watching a tiny model of themselves have sex with somebody else's tiny model." "Um........"

Wrinkle in Time
05-04-2005 15:11
From: Nyx Divine A Wrinkle In Time....my first Sci-fi book as a youngin.....I loved it Yeah! I must have read that one 20 times! Very good, very positive story for kids but not too "Disney" either as far as i remember. The sequels are all pretty religious though, (more than C.S.Lewis even and that is saying a lot). Turned me off a bit.

From: Dianne Mechanique What is the basic setup of those? Never heard of them. Here are some reveiws on the book series that say it best IMO OTHERLAND, a VR universe where any fantasy can be made real Surrounded by secrecy, it is home to the wildest dreams and darkest nightmares. Incredible amounts of money have been lavished on it. The best minds of two generations have labored to build it. And somehow, bit by bit, it is claiming the Earth's most valuable resource—its children. a tremendously powerful and realistic simulation network, where computers can create any environment or characters conceivable http://www.tadwilliams.com/

Thanks for the link you win the prize so far, (there is no actual prize ), for closest to SL. I thought Kiln People was close since it's all about duplicating yourself into an avatar and body modification, but yours seems much more on the nose, sort of speak. Interestingly though it was published in 1997. Does anyone know which came first otherland or SL?

Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson
(it had to be said)
Although certain aspects of SL make me think of much of Philip K. Dick's work, "We can remember it for you wholesale" (became Total Recall w/Arnold Schwartzenegger) for the fluid alteration of terrain and relationships, and the chaotic architecture, ignorance of physics & mechanical (scripted) pets of "Do androids dream of electronic sheep" (became Blade Runner w/Harrison Ford), others make me think of the fevered, hypnotic, color-infused, drug-induced ravings of "Naked Lunch" (directed by David Cronenberg, Peter Weller & Judy Davis in the lead roles). Also Peter Barker's Weaveworld fits the fluid, wildly unusual panorama that is SL.

The sheep in that story are actually more like SL than the androids from the movie version, but I would vote against philip on the basis that SL is logical place and Philip K. Dick is anything but logical.

Yep, lots of characters to remember lol, the series is a bit hazy to me, like i said I haven't read it in ages. But after I'm done w/ Terry Goodkinds 'A Sword of Truth Series' I'm gonna start hunting for my 'Otherland' books.

OMG!
What about "A Conneticutt Yankee in King Arthur's Court" by Mark Twain?
You have a guy plunked down in alien terrain, making the world his own w/his wits and knowledge.

For Us, the Living, by Robert Heinlein. Why? Mainly, the description of the economic system in 2086 sounds quite similar to SL's in many ways. The book can get a little preachy sometimes, but it's kinda interesting. It's also credited as being one of, if not the first, full-length novel Heinlein wrote.

Well i meant that SL takes place in a computer and is therefore "logical" to that degree. It was actually a way of taking a jab at Philip K. Dick who infuriates me. But I was trying to take the puch out of it as you obviously like him and i know I am very much alone in that opinon in most circles. I just like "hard" sci-fi better. Future scenarios and things that could actually happen etc. Dick has many holes in his plots and many nonsensical events that happen to resolve them and is thus more a fantasy writer to my mind than sci-fi. Hard to get many people to even agree on what science fiction even *is* though, so your opinion may vary depending on yours. Conneticut Yankee is an excellent reference, hilarious but better fitting htan some I have heard.
