Phoenix Psaltery and I will be starting an SL newspaper. I'm sure there are other news publications in SL already, but this will be different. I have seven years of experience in journalism, as well as a degree. Phoenix has an English degree, and is a genius at graphics. We are committed to bringing you all the news SL has to offer, in an enjoyable reading format.

If you think you might be interested in joining our team, please read my post in the employment section of the forums.

I get the urge to write humor columns from time to time.

I'm curious what format you have in mind for this newspaper. Seems like SL is knee-deep in tabloids. It would be refreshing to see one that avoids sensationalism and bias (well as much as human beings CAN avoid bias).

God yes! SL could really use more publications, especially ones that don't focus on drama and rumor. Best of luck with your new venture you two.

Katt,

This is great news - SL needs more good publications. One thing I'd love to see with future publications is some type of automated delivery for subscribers, instead of having to make a trip to pickup the latest issue. I think people would love this service.

Unless a "rumor" can be verified as truth, it will not be printed. Printing "rumors" in a First Life publication would result in a loss of readers AND possibily a lawsuit. I see no reason why a SL newspaper should not be run with as much ethics as a First Life newspaper requires.
As far as automatic subscriptions go, I do plan for that. I won't share those plans here, bc even in SL, there's such a thing as media rivalry.
Thank you all for the warm response to our venture. :)

Not necessarily. I think the difference here is between a tabloid and a legitimate newspaper.

From: someone
In its traditional sense, tabloids tend to emphasise sensational stories and are reportedly prone to create their news if they feel that the subjects cannot, or will not, sue for libel. In this respect, much of the content of the tabloid press could be said to fall into the category of junk food news.

At any rate, I like this idea. Two questions:

1) Will there be an emailable version?
2) Have you considered using Infonet to additionally distribute this?

I would love a real newspaper. I would also appreciate an online format that did not look like a blog but actually resembled a newspaper. The Onion is an excellent example of an online-paper format I really like.

Make sure you have an op-ed section so I can sway the masses with the mighty hand of the FIC.

Even legitimate papers sometimes take liberties with the truth. If you are the friend of the publisher and commit a crime or whatever, that story is likely to get buried. If you are an enemy of the publisher, you better not commit any crimes, etc, bc when you do, it will be on the second or third page, if not worthy of the first. Of course, I'm mainly talking about small papers, but big ones do it too... it's just not as noticable.
Of course, this paper will not ever do that. If we did, we would lose your respect, and that would be a horrible thing.
To answer your questions, our plan is to build the paper using Quark, pdf it and then tie the file to a notecard, so that when the notecard is opened, and the link clicked, an Acrobat file will open. This will make it possible for me to create as realistic a newspaper as possible.
Yes, long term plans include using other in world resources to distribute the paper.

You won't be using Wikipedia as the definitive source, will you? Real newspapers don't. :)

I'd like to thank all of you so much for the positive response to Katt's initial announcement. In addition, I'd like to say that I appreciate the input and comments regarding the type of content, method of delivery, etc. We certainly will strive to meet everyone's expectations if humanly (aviely?) possible.

We do plan to include an op-ed section, a letters to the editor section, comics, even classified and display advertising; everything that you would expect to find in any First Life newspaper.

Thank you all for your support.

Thanks for the info! Can't wait to see the first issue.

If you export your PDF version of the paper to HTML, then when inworld HTML is enabled you'll have a newspaper on a prim! :)

Don't go the Infonet route unless they do something to improve the loading time. ;)

We also need story ideas -- news and features. If you have any suggestions, please IM me in the game. Also, like in First Life newspapers, we will have a section for weddings and engagements. If you know of someone who has gotten married or will be getting married, please let them know that we would love to run their information and pictures.
