The other day I happened upon a object that looked like a record, and was playing a song. I thought to myself, "wow, this looks a lot like the one I made oh-so-long ago." So I checked the creator credits on it, to my suprise, it WAS the one I made so long ago! With the script I wrote! Now the funny thing is, I have never sold it. And before I happened upon it, I had only given it to 2 people, both tell me they did not redistribute it, but one who lost one on public land.

Now, I notice that half of second life seems to have a copy of this record, and they put thier own songs on it. I know its a lost cause, I have completely lost control of a product I was going to market - it is now open source (and I hope no one is selling it, (feel free to sell your sounds though - separate from the record)) just cause while I don't care to much about people useing my scripts for free (as I give most anything away anyways) but it would irk me to see someone else making money off my work.

What I would like to know though, is the path this record took to get to its fairly mass distributed status in SL. Did someone just find it public one day? Did you buy it? Did someone give it to you? I don't really want names, cause this is interesting to me in terms of how it got distributed, not a whitchhunt.

I'm glad that its getting use though - its kinda fun watching one's work spreading through the world. Maybe next time I'll have the brains to put a price tag on it first.

Thanks BBC I'll ask when I see ya.

The only time I think I've heard this thing was at RYGAR's rave. I think Jean was playing it but i could be wrong. And there was someone playing the Bangles at feniks event the other night. Not sure they were even your script but they sounded good. (except for the bangles of course :)

Well, I could have made it no copy/no modify, but that only makes sense if I'm selling it as music. I made it so anyone could upload the chunks of song and string them together. In order to allow this, they have to allow modification - people putting in thier own loops.

This is one more reason for external script controls (like we saw in the language during the alpha)

A previous post I put up related to this...
04-09-2003 09:20
...asked sort of the same question kinda sorta.

Anybody doing higher-end or widely desired work, particularly related to sound, motion, clothes/textures, and attack capability will probably have this problem sooner or later. Useful scripts will be exposed to the web or handed out to all members of a group. Just imagine the proliferation of available scripts a year from now with 1-2k+ or more players. My plans for a script shop were stalled when I realized that somebody could just buy my inventory and distribute or post it (though I think I may have found a way to beat this); non-modifiable or copy-able scripts would be a tough sell. Although scripting may be "harder" than building, the nature of spoiler sites and the ease of cut-n-paste would seem to make building the more lasting career, since you can't post a spoiler for a complex object unless you want to lay out all axis coords, dimensions, rotations, etc. In a year, probably most things people will need to script (doors elevators sound smoke fire rotation textureanims etc.) will be freely available in finished form.

It would seem you have to jealously guard your creations. Sell or give nothing to anybody unless it can't be copied or modified. There's a big downside to this; I bought one of those neat light-up globes from Avatar Central yesterday; 50 bucks, not bad. I eyeballed the size and it looked about right. It's no modify. I got home, the dern thing was too tall. I used a couple of tricks to make it appear shorter and got what I wanted, but of course couldn't actually resize the object. It would seem I need to bring a measuring stick when I shop, or wait to contact the owner so he can modify it for me. I know that's how it works in the RL, but then please give me the option to return or exchange the item without having to track down the creator. Overall, for the failed effort to find the creator and the stunts I had to figure out to deceive the eye and make it look shorter, it would have been easier to build it.

What do you think?

Feniks and Xavier are known to work as a team. In fact, you always see them, and their voting stations, side by side. Seems to me they are working together again to throw off the investigation.

I suggest you corner each one of them alone, and one of them will crack. Or, find a good accomplice and do “Good Cop, Bad Cop” on them…….for sure they will tell all. ;)

This is a really impoortant topic for all who want to make money scripting.

Ok, random idea. Maybe they could make it so that there are seperate options for objects and scripts. I mean, you could choose to allow modifying and copying of just the object and/or just the script. This way a person can use the script and only modify the object or even put it on another object, whatever. You get the idea. If this is used of course, a non-modifyable script should not be able to be seen at all by the owner, because of the ability to copy-paste.

I think something like this might help. A scripter can then sell a script and the buyer can use it as-is however and with whatever they want. But, they won't be able to see it or change it.

good idea? bad idea? am i missing something? whaddya think?

I was given a copy. I could tell you who, but you asked for no names.

I do want to thank you for creating such a wonderful script.

I am a musician and have wanted to load some of my music into SL. Now I can play more than 10 secs. of a song.

The option to mark a script non-modify/copy/viewable but leave the object modifiable and copyable would seem to be worth exploring. I have no idea how hard this would be to implement I'll starve on my current in-game teaching salary and stipend and I'm not into fashion, would hate to lose the option to make good money off of nice scripts.

Hey hmm...can you drag a script onto the ground, make it non-copy-modify, drag it back into inventory, then use it on an item (and it'll still work?). I will try this first thing tonight unless somebody that has tried it can say for sure it's a no go.
