Well, welcome to Second Life.
We don't have in game skills, yet. Some people are making some though.
Basically Second Life is a virtual world where you can do nearly anything. You can create objects and interact with people.
The important skills in this game are irl skills. Mathematics, Computer Programming, Artistic Abilities...
Things you can contribute to the world.
The ideal fate is to just have fun.

SL is a bit different than anything I have seen so far. It takes some getting used to the fact that there are no game mandated goals. You dont have to learn to kill trolls (or whatever) to improve your skills. It is a second life, you can do as little as you like without penalty, or become very productive and reap the reward.
As a newbie, I would suggest exploring and meeting others to see what they are up too. Experiment with building things, you might see a need for a commodity or service that you can market to earn an income. Upload your artwork and show it off, whatever. Your experience in SL is really what you decide to do with it. It is not really a competitive game and its not for everyone, but it can be a nice place to get away from your first life for awhile.

Here are some ideas about what to do.
Everybody finds a different place in Second Life. It really depends on what you are interested in. Take the time to find out the different possibilities. Here are some staring points:
Click on the Events tab on the top of the screen and see what's happening. You can also host events.
If you are into building - take an Intro to Building Class.
At the end of the Welcome Area are a few jump stations pointing to various different experiences in SL:
Go try out some motorcylces or hoverboards in Oak Grove.
Check out the monster killing and leveling in Dark Life.
Go shopping in Aqua.
Check out the crazy builders in the free building area of Olive.
LindenWorld will reopen tomorrow so there should be more action there then.
Mainly, take the time to discover the world and check out what other people are doing and figure out what part of Second Life suits you best.
Or invent a new part.
