Being a relative nooB, I hear mentions of the mysterious Hippo. I think I have also seen a Hippo or two IW. I've also read about how the elusive Hippo makes people happy. Even now the Lindens are cashing in on the Hippo craze with these new personal devices named after the being.

But, what I'd really like is a condensed history on how the Hippo came to be in SL.

Does anyone have this knowledge?

Yes, but it's very very stupid. :)

One day the Linden's were wondering how to have people with common interests find each other and in wandered this hippo. So they whispered words to the hippo and then the hippo made them glow sort of red when two people matched the same word. But this hippo was way to big, so being the Lindens, they shrunk it down and caged it in a nokia phone shell. Then they passed it out to their friends.

True story.

Juro, hippos came along once when darwin got bored and posted in the forums what has now become the longest, oldest thread in SL history.
Quoth the loony:

"Hippos

I know there's a war going on, and so many things are happening around the world, but come on folks. There is still fun to be had!

Who here likes hippos? I know I'm not the only one!"

Why on earth he thought of that particular subject, nobody knows :)
Blame it on the gnomes, we all do.

Thanks Eggy! So, really, it could have been any animal out there.. it just happened to be Hippos. Hmm.. I guess that works, they're large, round, and somewhat jolly looking.

At least he didnt pick the Mongoose. ;)

I'm partial to Penguins myself, but Hippos make more sense for getting rid of gnomes, the best penguins could do is dress the gnomes fancy, quack at them, huddle around them, and push them in water. So Hippos work :)

Best Hippos IMHO:

Hippo From Sly Cooper And The Theivius Racoonis (can't remember his name, but he was a good character)

Hippo's from Fantasia

Humphry The Hippo (From The Critic - "He made Humphry sad! Get him!";)

Ever notice how most Hippo's colors are changed in cartoons? Guess no one likes the ugly brown original color.

Hippos are actualy quite leathal too.

Don't forget the kids' game "Hungry, Hungry Hippos," which was around when I was a kid and seems to be making a comeback.
