I looked and couldnt find a topic for this, but is something wrong with GOM, or is it just me?

I know this is not what the original poster meant, but does anyone know why the GOM value is down so suddenly?

Every Tuesday, when the stipends are paid, GOM does a little dive. Don't worry though, because every weekend, it goes back up.
Its a very obvious weekly cycle. It just so happens that its dipped a bit further than usual the last 2 weeks. Its not anything that I would worry about. - Ace _____________________

Down to $4 USD. Remember folks, it was up to $4.36 not too long ago.
What happened? |

As I understand it, someone or several someones dumped thier L$ stash(es). That along with the usual stipend-day dip, we get a wee crashlette. I'm not terribly worried about it, this just means there's probably more than the usual amount of L$ circulating in-world. (My sales have been better in the past few days.) It will climb again, though perhaps not to those heady heights in any near future.

My sales over the past few days have sucked.
With all this new money in the economy, people must not feel the need to buy secondhand items. LoL. |

I just accessed GOM to place some buy orders to take advantage of this price dip. The site is fine.

If you have also noticed, the volume of L$ is very high lately. This just means that someone, or someones, are dumping their L$. In a few days, the market will correct itself and the value will be higher, just like after the last dump. The real question is who is dumping and why are they dumping?

I think it is land related. Quite a few private islands have changed hands recently - maybe one or more of these was part paid in Lindens? Roberta, I would have to agree with you. With the number of new private islands and watching the leaders boards, I think people are just converting their L$ into cash to use in other investments. I have also noticed that IGE is now buying at 4.08USD/1kL$ and Anshe is buying at 100kL$ for 400USD. I think you will see the market rise and fall for a bit as people get used to the new trading levels. When the next big thing comes along, I am sure that the value will rise as everyone buys L$, then it will fall again as it fades. I just find it fascinating how dynamic this economy is.

GOM prices dropped because I bought Linden Dollars there. So now the universe has to rub it in and say Haha, look! You coulda had it for cheaper. Always happens.

In a few days, the market will correct itself and the value will be higher, just like after the last dump. The real question is who is dumping and why are they dumping? I sold most of my Linden$. But I was not the cause, just the accelerator of one trend I noticed some time ago. Now I can use money and happily expand the Second Life grid further ![]() _____________________

It isn't "down".
It just isn't "up" anymore. (Remember, the Central Bank said that the target exchange rate is US$4 per L$1000.) Buster |

Because the money shifts among their alts, you have a different number of real people behind the top 10 at different times, and a different percentage of their money. (For example, Anshee Chung and Anshe Chung). The economic activity and GOM statistics are better indicators. |

I sold packets yesterday for $4.07/1000, sometimes you have to wait for that Tuesday payday dip to climb back up.
The aberration is that it went up to $4.25 and $4.36, and the gratitude should be that it didn't crash down to $3.87. If it can stay around $4. that's supposedly the Tsar Philip ruble norm (of course I know he will have an insider's golden ruble rate for foreign offshore oil companies but...) It's not just that Anshe cashed out. When Anshe slashes telehub and cashes out, other people way down farther in the chain have to begin cashing out too -- it just makes sense. It is hard to justify continued major inworld investments when we've had so much social engineering to destabilize the market lately. I also tie these fluctuations to the patches. When the Lindens get ready to put in a new patch, the dollar can be at an all-time low with all kinds of frustration. The new patch then raises expectations sometimes, and then sometimes crashes them a week later. It should almost become a conservative investors' rule of thumb never to buy or sell or make any move whatsoever while patches are coming and going, they are that destabilizing. The appearance of the New Continent which was a major glut on the land market, at the same time as Ansheland's appearance, made land cheaper, made people buy more Lindens to buy it, and that made the GOM go up to $4.25 ($4.36 I think was a really rare day). When I saw that, I was glad to cash out those days and make up for the pain of having to cash out months ago at those $3.87 days. But anyone who has watched it fluctuate knows it will go up and down like this based on the land supply. The question to me is whether it will stay at $4. or plummet further as it did in the summer with the famous Snowcrash and all the rest. And a key factor on that IMHO is whether the Lindens stop messing up the events calendar and stop thwarting clubs and Tringo, and whether they stop messing with advertising private islands -- because the messing with advertising is a larger chilling message that goes on the temporary -- and not major -- devaluation of land that comes with the private island parcel-deeding glut. _____________________
