New Internet Tech 153,000 Times Faster Than Modem

Scientists have developed a new data transfer protocol for the Internet fast enough to download a full-length DVD movie in less than five seconds, the California Institute of Technology said today.

The protocol is called FAST, standing for Fast Active queue management Scalable Transmission Control Protocol (TCP).

The researchers achieved a speed of 8,609 megabits per second (Mbps) by using 10 simultaneous flows of data over routed paths, the largest aggregate throughput ever accomplished in such a configuration, Caltech said in a news release. "That is 153,000 times that of today's modem and close to 6,000 times that of the common standard for ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) connections."

Also, I've developed an unbreakable encryption algorithm, and a lossless compression method that works on any data set.

I, um, don't have time to type in the details here.

From reading the article, it looks like they've split the data up, sent it down multiple lines then re-assembeled at the other end, while competing with other network traffic. This is definetly a neat trick, but the comparison with ADSL is a bit silly I think. Like saying "by utilizing 150 tanker trucks and the interstate highway system, we achived a million times the cargo capacity of a 2L bottle of coke in the backseat of a Ford Fiesta"

It's like fiberoptic... they use the specter (<- don't knwo the spelling) to stream in multi thread.... so that is 1 piece of glass over all the colours can carry something like 500 octs. So all of the worlds info in one seconde!

But the FAST thing seems cool.... just when is it gonna be available for 39.99?... never...
