A question came to me last night: I was wondering, if you built an object large enough to fit over an avatar (like a plus-sized bird cage, for instance), and stuck it over an ususpecting av, would they be trapped there? Since you can't move an object without having the creator's approval, I believe. This would mean you would have to log out, then log back in again at some other location.

Not that I want to try this! If this is indeed possible (though would be very difficult to pull off), what repercussions would there be in this instance?

Thanks in advance for any answers to my silly question! --- Sol

They would also have to place an object at the player's home location as well. While this is possible, it's very not likely that they would know the exact location.

yes, if you build an object, say a hollow box with a metal grate texture (cage), around some one, and it is set to not be modifiable, and it is not on their land (people can delete any object that is on their land), then they are stuck there, kind of. You can log out, like you said, or you can pay the $2 it takes to teleport somewhere, or teleport home for free. so there isn't really anyway to permanently "cage" another avatar.

heh in fact, i am making an object that will search out other avatars, and then "cage" them, but is going to be part of my practical joke shop, which will be coming soon :-)

there are no silly questions, just silly answers!

I believe there still exists at least one black-magic spell (in other words... a bug that can exploit a feature) that would enable an avatar to escape such a cage without teleporting or logging out. Unfortunately, it is my job to defuse such magic; any spell I think up will not be a spell for long, since it represents a path by which the rules of the world can be broken.

We've been considering the problem of trapped avatars since this project started. Griefer behavior in Ultima Online has shown that we may have to solve the problem somehow someday, but I'm not sure how to do it yet.

Any ideas?
