Trees are annoying

There's a park being built next to my property in Perry. I think this is a great idea and anything realistic beautifies SL.

However, trees themselves are annoying me. First, they can very easily intrude into other people's property (though my neighbors have been very nice about relocating them) despite technically being on your land.

The major problem I have with trees, however, is the apparent amount of processing power they take. If I stand in place on my property and turn a full 360 by holding down an arrow key, I can see a noticeable slowdown when I'm facing the trees, and a big drop in framerate of the turn.

I primarily spend my time in SL scripting, and it's annoying to have simple objects placed innocently near me affect the perceived lag on my property so much. The lag time for responses from some of my scripts has increased noticeably since the trees went in.

Again, I like the appearance of the trees, and even the swaying (except when they sway through a solid object). I applaud efforts to beautify SL. It's still hard not to be annoyed that objects there to look good are negatively affecting my SL experience.

You can turn your view of trees off. Look around in the debug menu. Debug > Rendering > Types > Tree. Trees will disappear from your view. Then your client will not have to take any computing power to render them, and your neighbor can still enjoy them. Win-win :)

Thanks for pointing that out -- hadn't occurred to me to check.
I may recommend that people at my event do so as well if they're having problems.

Ahhhh... everything's smooth now :)

<sigh> I wish I had a debug menu. It used to be available in "Help" but now one has to do that Ctrl/alt/D and that minimizes SL and brings up Word.

I believe you can mess with settings.ini and change the debug menu value from false to true. :)

Is there a debug setting for just turning off billboards?
