It runs. I crash a lot but that's to be expected in testing. One night I got stuck on the texture island and couldn't teleport off because "there was no telepoint within 100m of the chosen destinatio." Even relogging didn't help! It cleared the next day.
Shiney looks quite a bit different, that's going to require some rebuilding and getting used to. The new map has an actual terrain feature showing only terrain. It's very nice to have a genuine map map without all that clutter. Very very nice thank you LL.
The estate tool is visible which is nice too. We can't change anything, but we can see the ground textures and height settings, av limits and such. That's a nice addition as well but may not be present at release.
If I understand it correctly, the real boon is that scripts are being given presized time slices and spread across clock cycles. This keeps the sim from trying to process each and every script, along with all it's other duties, every single clock. Instead, it can sweep through its own processes then a given set of scripts one clock cycle, then repeat but with the next set of scripts, then the next. Sim lag will be reduced to nothing and the scripts will be reasonably executed every few sweeps rather than just started and stopped, with very minimal processing, every single sweep. We will see this as improved proformance and as a steady sim fps of around 45.
The mythology of Havok2, interactive inworld browsing, mono, group feature revision, open XML/RPC, p2p, and the client API has survived to be passed to another generation of hopeful newbies.

It's cool. Some very nice new features, and some bug fixes. And also some fun new bugs. Check out the 1.7 forum to get a feel for it. And as Khamon said, no HTML or anything we thought was coming in 1.7. Unfortunate? Yes. Surprising? Not really. Dissapointing? Eh, I'd be lieing if I said no, but nothing new to start a 5 page rant about.

I always want more... the changes that've been made are by and large welcome (with the exception of some of those IM abominations which should be cast back to the swamplands of outer Mongolia o.O) but I want MORE!

Windows 98? Ouch! I'm surprised it can't run SL... could be the hardware though, I thought 98 was able to run SL? I know my old machine that previously had 98, and was from, uh... 1998 most likely, wouldn't be able to run SL at all. It couldn't even run Quake 3 or anything but StarCraft. Hope you can get back in soon! The no HTML does suck, but, we takes what we can gets.

Oh, and we have attachment movement. That rocks. You should see the thread about it; there's a nice animation there.

Yes, Windows 98 does suck. It kept on vomiting on my poor little Pentium-100, so I switched to using my Linux installation.
(Yes, text-mode runs quite nicely with that much processing power)
