Yes, if it were up to me and if I had the ability, I'd like to advertise in SL about kewl schtuff from foreign shores that doesn't really show up in America. As SL becomes increasingly international, and as advertising inworld increases, I hope the cultural diversity does as well.
O, there I go missing the obvious... WATERMELONS! _____________________

My younger daughter has a book of weird Japanese products; they are pretty strange; a lot are what I would call oddball inventions, like the toothbrushing devices that just slip over your finger. That's one of the more normal things from that book which I have actually seen in the real marketplace. Weird devices would be a natural for SL commericial-making builders but it might be hard to tell the difference between the commercial's set and the surroundings. _____________________

I'd love to build homes, office buildings, town houses, etc on spec from architects who would use it to sell real estate before it's built.

That's a really good point—maybe all the reason why they should be in here, because it actually immerses instead of distracts from the experience. Hmmm... by any chance, is your daughter's book titled CHINDOGU or something like that? If so, I'm familiar with it! ![]() _____________________

From your wikipedia link: "The term was coined by Kenji Kawakami, a Japanese inventor and writer who first made the idea prominent in a book translated into English, in the mid-nineties, as 101 Unuseless Japanese Inventions: The Art of Chindogu." _____________________

Any. I'd love to be paid full time money - enough to live on - to build in SL. _____________________

I'd like to see small companies use SL to get the word out about their product. I'm talking places that have no identifiable brand, so that if someone saw a big sign in SL (e.g. MeatPuppet Foundry) they'd not know that it's some small shop in, say North Carolina or Peru or wherever, producing beautiful handmade puppets to the tune of maybe 200/yr. Definitely not a mass consumer good.
And how many think that a big company still holds the same advantage over them in SL that they do in RL? I don't. If I saw two ads/signs in SL - one with the Reebok logo and one with the 2Lefeet logo - I know which one I'd be curious about. A build for something like this could be a blast (no corporate nanny telling you what to do for one thing). |

On this topic, I do have one concern - and I'm not trying to be negative or to bash LL.... I wonder whether an advantage might be that a company like Wells Fargo or [fill in the blank] could command additional exposure, resources, and placement simply by dealing for them from LL - and LL, of course, would grant these because it is more to their benefit as a profit-oriented corporation than to maintain a level playing field for everyond - individuals and RL corporations - in the SL "free market". You and I have not nearly the nearly the pull that the COO's and CEO's of WF and E-bay have with the company that owns of the SL platform, and as other people have expertly pointed out on these forums, LL is not a government interested in maintaining the sort of economic zeitgeist advocated by Adam Smith, Paul Samuelson, and others. _____________________

It's a valid point. And so long as the platform is proprietary no one should be at all surprised if certain "favors" are granted - that's capitalism; and right now it's capitalism that's making this technology available in the first place. However, whether it's LL or some other entity, this technology will almost certainly become as ubiquitous as html code and available such that no single entity can control it, thus mitigating any potentially adverse outside influence. If in the meantime LL makes certain changes resulting from outside influence that erode support for SL, then it'll quite possibly die and another platform will emerge to take its place. If LL balances those influences with the realities of the service they provide to the population, they'll likely continue. In the meantime, those of us who are here now get a chance to see some interesting things unfold. That alone is worth the price of admission imo. |

I love this idea. I bet there are some small business owners or ebay entrepreneurs who use SL and could give this a try. There are tons of pieces of equipment for sale that one could make models of. Ebay could have a little ad offering SL download as an "Ebay 3D viewer plugin". I have long meant to toss is a comment about making an SL viewer browser plugin available. An SL plugin user might have the view from mouselook, would not have any of the menu options or powers that wouldn't make sense for someone just dropping by to take a look, and would have restrictions on where they could go. _____________________
