What's in your furniture?

If this is the wrong spot I'msaying sorry in advance but I wanted a full public opinion so thought general was the best place.

Recently there has been the release of alot of alternatives to pose balls. Some have been aroud a while and other have just emerged. I have started to make furniture and the idea came to my mind. "I have the furniture...now for poses". Then I realized there is so much out there and so much ability for variety that I wasn't sure which way to go. Some friends said to slap poseballs on like it was a BBQ sauce, others said just use a few "basic" ones, others said use sexgen or posecubes, and some even said "you don't just add your own?"

So tell us everyone, what do or don't you use in your furniture.

I dont really like poses so I often use a basic sit position script and place it in one of the prims. This not only saves a prim or two but allows your avatar some flexibility, they dont sit as ridgid as they do with a pose. Also witha basic sit position you can still play a sit animation and you will be sitting with a pose if you like that better. Not to mention people can add their own pose balls to the furniture and simply remove the sit position script.

I use the basic sit position for a lot of chairs and couches, however things like loungers, recliners, beds, etc you pretty much have to use a pose/poseball to get your avatar to position itself how you want on the furniture.

i really dislike poseballs. that being said i own and use furniture with them. but when ever i make something myself i usually make use of sittarget to position the AV in the right place. it even works with anims and multiple sit targets. its a bit more work but aesthetically much more pleasing.

yes, sit targets/positions are what i sue too, I like your thinking. A lot of my guests play sit animations over them, or their A/O plays one for them. It ads for my variety and character, people can choose how they want to sit.

I had this same exact problem when I started making furniture as well. I don't mind sit poses but I hate the look of the balls. I didn't want the open listen to lag things either. I also have a problem with the fact that avies are different sizes. So what may look right for one, looks totally stupid for another.

I started off with poses balls being included in the contents of the object. So that way, if someone wanted to use them, they can just go into the contents of the chair, take out the pose balls, put them on and adjust accordingly. But I found that people were ccustomed to the posed furniture soooo....

After getting help from a most helpful customer of mine *one of the reasons I love SL*, I put the pose balls on the furniture and just make them transparent. That way, they can click on the seat, there is no poseball for open listen commands, and it doesn't get in the way. I still have sets that don't have the poses on them in case anyone asks for them.

Remember, there should be no need for a listener at all in a pose ball. Having to click your chair to toggle pose balls on and off, then including a timer to automatically make them go away after 10 seconds or so is a good design, and frequently, a lot easier and faster to use than even a simple chat system.

Pennies, old french fries, expired TV guides, cat hair, etc. :p

More seriously; I put the scripts right into the furniture prims, then offset the axes as necessary.

if I make furniture for my own use I usually do something specific for it myself.

I don't make furniture for others anymore, and when I did I left it unscripted (so folks could do with it as they pleased) -- I'd throw in a 'sleep pillow' for beds - as linked balls generally not only leave no flexability for different AV sizes, but they also don't look all that nice.

Siggy.

Well the input is great but so far there is the assumption that ou need or want only one pose. What about things like beds, pools, couches, etc. Usually you need more then one. Personally as of right now I was tempted just to make the item and let the customers decide what sit, lay, cuddle, naughty stuff to add.

As for the hieght issue. um...my partners are usually coming up to my belly...you can imagine te funny mismatches we gte with certain pose ball sets.

anything you can do with a poseball you can do without. i.e. a couch for 2. instead of 2 poseballs you put the scripts into 2 different cushions with appropriate offsets for the sit targets so the AVs end up sitting in the right places.

you can put a pose or sit script in every prim of your couch, so you could seat 10 on a 10 prim couch, each with a different pose.

IM me inworld and i can show you what im talking about.
