every little bit helps.

Click and donate a cup of food via the Hunger site. It doesn't cost anything but looking at the ad.

* * *

clean your house. take that usable stuff you don't need anymore to a local charity.

don't take it to the red cross; they can't use and don't take in-kind donations.

* * *

how to volunteer for the red cross:
http://www.redcross.org/where/chapts.asp

* * *

if you're in the bay area you can do this:
http://www.santaclaravalley.redcross.org/pressreleases/2005_hurricane_katrina_relief.html
From: someone
All participants must meet the criteria below…
1. Must live in Santa Clara County
2. Must be available for 2-3 weeks between training and December
3. Must be available 3 weeks once each year for disaster deployment
4. Must have ongoing daytime availability for local disaster response, community presentations, meetings, trainings, etc.
5. Must be in good health and able to withstand the rigors of disaster assignment, attestable by personal health assessment
6. Must be available the entire time for training, 8am-6pm at Santa Clara Valley Chapter Headquarters

the number to call to get on the waiting list is: (408)577-1000

(the fact that there is a waiting list because so many people signed up makes me proud of how much people care.)

donation to red cross:
http://redcross.org

if you can't go there, and if you can't afford to give more than you have already given, then you should do what my friend suggests - volunteer locally for any of your local volunteer organizations. this will help unburden local charities local loads, and will help them send more relief. also, many of the already trained red cross relief workers are probably working at local charities; as they leave you can back fill so their local charity work still gets done.

many churches will be collecting a special offering this weekend for hurricane victims. Even if you are not normally a church go-er, going this week and giving whatever is in your wallet could help a lot!

you can donate craft items to an auction.

you can get that handcrafted item you've always wanted.

SLuniverse isn't an ecommerce site, so we would not be accepting donations directly anyway. However, I am providing advertising space for the Burning Life Katrina benefit efforts on the Snapzilla site. If someone wants to pull together a web page listing all the ways SL members can help and create a banner for it, I will gladly add that as well.

data entry for katrina victims

Need help with volunteer data entry

http://www.ethanzuckerman.com/blog/?p=167

From: someone
building a single database to resolve the dozens of “people missing” and “people safe” databases that have appeared on the web in the past week.

From: someone
We need two types of help on this project right now. If you’ve got a free hour to do data entry, we would love your help. Go to the Volunteer page of the wiki, follow instructions, choose and claim the chunk you’d like responsibility for. And please give me feedback on whether the process makes sense to you or whether the instructions are too confusing.

go here to volunteer:

Just want to tell you what I have seen:

Yesterday, the call went out for bottled water, wheelchairs, walkers, cots, sleeping bags, and linens. A request for these items was printed in the Austin American Statesman along with an address (people offerening help were urged not to go to the area shelters). As I got closer to the donation site with a very small offering of new bedding, and I found myself, at 4:30pm, in a line of cars that stretched easily for two miles!!!!

Happily, I was turned away after about 20 minutes!! I will bring my donations today, and I will joyfully wait in line. I have never been so happy to be turned down in my life!!

Human beings can be such splendid creatures. :) :) :)

hey crafty people (and ebay people)
09-05-2005 13:23
i know most of you are modest folk and all.

but if you donated an item to
http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=3146&sort=recent&page_id=1
or
http://givingworks.ebay.com/

let people know you put something up!

because not only do they need items to sell...

but they need buyers so they can raise money.

let your friends know they can buy your stuff for a good cause.

Hmm, slauctions.com is down so it appears there is no easy way for me to auction myself off for charity again. I'm kinda strapped for time but if anyone's running a people/services auction please add me to their list (and let me know).

And if you have a 4"x6" index card, or sufficient ruler-and-scissors skill to cut paper to that size, you can do this one:

"Project HeART is asking artists from tattooists to painters to pick up a 4”x6” index card and give heART! Design a realistic heart, paint a sacred heart, sketch a traditional heart- whatever your style may be, we want to combine your amazing talent with that of other great artists to help the victims of Katrina that have lost everything. We'll be gathering all works of art into one large piece for a charity auction on eBay, with all profits going to Habitat for Humanity. Don't have an index card? Or prefer working on another material? Any 4”x6” paper will do! Your contribution is more appreciated than you will know! Participants are asked to include their name, website, company, or other information that they would like attached to their work. Also send your email address to be made aware of the upcoming auction!

Spread the word and send your submissions by September 16, 2005 to:

Project HeART
c/o Brandon
1885 California Ave.
Corona, CA 92881

Let us know you're participating! Email ProjectHeART@hotmail.com for more information or to sign up!"
