Well, I survived Katrina. Some didn't.
Water up to rooftop eaves and above in places in the 9th Ward lower areas. Water -1-3 feet deep (or more) between I-10 and the south edge of Lake Ponchatrain from the Kenner-St. Charles Pasih line all the way east to N.O.East (past UNO in Gentilly, past the Lakefront Airport and further east).
Lakesie, Clearview and Elmwood Shopping Centers in Metairie are flooded or building damaged to the point of unusability/being uninhavbitable. Esplanade Mall in Keener is underwater.
Downtown NeW Orleans - water damage is spotty --- in some places major water damage, the next street over, no serious water.
Over 100 people were stranded on rooftops --- or in attics calling 911 for rescue. Coast Guard helos were photographed executing some rescues.
Video of looters has been turned over to NOPD.
The Water Supply in Jefferson and Orleans Parishes are to be considered contaminated --- boiling is VERY MUCH recommended.
The entire greater New Orleans Area is without power. FEMA estimates as much as a month to restore power - as much as three weeks to restore water, if not more.
Heading towards Baton Rouge, many small towns have large numbers of wooden structures --- large numbers of houses with roof damage. Massive power outages from Baton Rouge all the way down Airline Highway/I-10 to NEw Orleans. In Baon Rouge, tree damage and power outages -- but power is being restored slowly.
More as local news shows detailed tapes... if I can.

are with you and all those who were in the path of the storm. I hope the coming weeks are kind to you and your families and that there are bright moments in the misery I'm sure will result from this terrible disaster.

Glad to hear you're ok.
I suppose it's sort of a good and bad thing - some of the outlying areas are devastated, and downtown is fairly intact.
At any rate, best wishes to you and all others affected, and I hope things are put back in order sooner than later.

I really appreciate the update on Baton Rouge. My brother and I have been trying to get through to family members all day, and of course, all circuits are either dead or overloaded. If ripped-up trees are the worst of it, then B.R. got off light. OTOH, my Dad lives in a settled neighborhood with scads of huge fifty-year-old trees... -- jj

CNN reporting now 80 dead in Mississippi just from two counties. Reports say the mayor of NOLA said he expects maybe as many as hundreds have perished in New Orleans East and the 9th Ward.

Thank god! Lita Kothari also survived Katrina. She was in Biloxi. I was getting worried since the power went out and she wasn't able to call me.

Got an email from Dad yesterday. He said that power is still mostly out and that his yard looks like WW II was fought in it, but that the City of Baton Rouge has already been making emergency pickups of dead trees, etc.
He works downtown, and his office is now the campsite for a group of refugees. I think that's probably true of more than one downtown office building, and who knows how many private homes.
I think Houston's offer of the Astrodome is magnificent, but I haven't heard or read anything about that since yesterday morning.

My local paper, Austin, TX, says that refugees are making it this far west--there are shelters open here, but they are filling quickly as people are being removed from hotels to make room for 'people with reservations'!??! As far as the Astrodome is concerned, I think Reliant Stadium would make a better choice--it is bigger and newer. But the buses are supposed to be rolling by tonight.

Got out of New Orleans sunday, I was lucky. I went to Atlanta and now I'm in Buffalo. Most of the gas stations were empty as people were evacuating, the highway was a slow line of cars, reduced to one lane in several places. Now I'm glad I didn't stay, it's crazy down there and it's going to get worse.

Just to Sweeten the Mix...

(I appreciate the concern, Euterpe Dad finally made voice contact with my brother. He's sleeping in the office with the refugees (and I'm not really comfortable with that, unless there's a buddy system going.) Apparently the LSU Assembly Center (about 7,000 capacity IIRC) and the Baton Rouge Civic Center (about 3,000 seats? It's been awhile) are packed to capacity. The Army's getting ready to deploy 30,000 troops into N.O. But the cat may already be way, way out of the bag on that...a lot of the looting in N.O. has targeted gun stores and pawnshops..and, perfectly understandably, it didn't occur to anyone to set up search checkpoints along the two major routes into B.R., if such a thing is even legal. Baton Rouge is about 90 miles from the outskirts of N.O., so there's been plenty of time for healthy folks to make the trip on foot. Apparently bands of armed individuals are now being sighted in Baton Rouge, where huge numbers of private homes (including my Dad's) are presently without both alarms and occupants. The ugliness in Louisiana is not only getting worse....it's getting bigger. -- jj
