One of the pleasures of Second Life is role playing and pretending to be what you aren't.
Some are content with pretending to be just one thing, other's pretend to be different characters even though they use the same account. They just switch their avatar body and poof! they are someone else even though they have the same name.

Others might want to have a more definite division between their different characters and keep them secret. A person might want to play the part of a wild sexy temptress in one account but be a political professor in another.

This sort of role playing can be done in the forums just as well as it can be done in SL.

What's your view, should people that like role playing be able to use the accounts they paid for in the forums for the role playing that motivated them to pay?

Hi Buster, did you see the poll?

Yes I did, and I voted.

By "silly question", I mean "the answer is obvious". I mean no disrespect, quite the opposite.

Thanks! :)
My setup was a little biased but I tried to make the question simple and clear and the answers fair.

The other poll was a public poll, which means people can try to draw conclusions based on how you voted.

Run a number of polls with public answers, record the answers, see which groups always vote the same. It's an alt detector!

Fools run in packs. So that method isn't foolproof. So to speak.

I answered yes to express my opinion but the correct answer is Moot Point, I would think.

1. alt

In MMPORGS like MUDs, a reference to a player's supplementary--thus "alternative"--avatar/character. Not the player's primary character but one used for blowing off steam, avoiding a primary character's responsibilities, or exacting anonymous revenge on a player-character you dislike.

I logged on with my alt after PKing him cuz I didn't want him to gank me.

Define alt.

Some have but one account, they have no alts.

Some have more than one, they have alts.

They have alternatives when it's time to log in, hence "Alts".

Some people might have an alt to test puhguns on or to use for building avatars, personality free drones, but still alts - just really lousy alts.

Others might have a alt that's a straight laced conservative man and another that's a tarty female.

The uses don't matter , if you have a choice of accounts that are yours then you have alts.

Some might have one main character that they see as their REAL avatar and others that are their make believe avatars. God that sounds nuttier than all of them being the same in real/unrealness, but that's probably common with alts.

enough, time to sleep.

When Prok got banned, that would not stop him from using his alts. Finally LL had to crack the whip and ban them all. Only takes one griever to screw it up for everyone.

This one fits:

There's a problem that definition, it applies to games - and Second Life is not a game, it is a development platform, and anyone who suggests otherwise might have David Linden on the handle end of a baseball bat coming to clarify their thoughts on the matter.

Or not, who knows? Maybe he was just kidding.

I suspect that in many cases the secondary alts are nicer than the primary alts.

They would have to be; in many cases it would be difficult to be more unpleasant that the primary account. ;)

In essence, aren't we all 'ALTS'?

I mean, 'Second Life' could have just as easily been named 'Alternate Life'

So, I see no difference in using your primary alt or any others you might have here on the forums or in game. They are all 'alts' and are only as true to the actual person as that person decides them to be.

Now, if we find out that someone uses their alt to debate or confirm their other alt's opinion (i.e. a conversation with themself!), then maybe said person ought to be seeking professional help!!!

Sad thing is, I've seen this exact behaviour in a tabletop RPG - and yes, the person was quite severaly disturbed (as we later found out....)

I would think that would happen all the time. Alts could laugh at a joke when no one else does. If one's brilliant idea receives no response at all, then one can bump and provide positive feedback with a comment from an alt, or just a question. If one wants to make a dull conversation more interesting, just throw in some silly or naughty comment from an alt.

An interesting challenge would be to maintain a secondary alt, clearly not one's main alt or "real self", that is smarter, more charming, more witty, more popular and just better in every way than one's real self alt.
