The Police Blotter knows, without even asking, what’s on your minds this week. Could it be the finer points of safe areas, the definition of nudity, or any of a thousand fascinating topics related to policing Second Life? No. Once again, the Blotter is asked to delve into the unseemly world of the phallus. Just when I thought I was out – they pull me back in!

The male member in question has been burning up the forums all week, and the discussion raises interesting questions about the limits of Mature sims. The problem, however, is that the PB doesn’t comment on specific Residents or instances of policing. Luckily, a quick search of the Police Blotter Mail Bag turned up a great letter that will shed a bit of light on the subject at hand:

From: someone
Dear PB,

My neighbor has, um, erected a new tower catty-corner from my very popular bow-tie, cravat, and ascot shop. I live in a mature sim and I’m no prude, but the thing is offensive. And the script that makes it…..well, I don’t even want to talk about that! My problem is that other people – potential ascot and cravat customers – seem to think it’s funny. I don’t want to be seen as a ‘stick-in-the-mud’, so I’ve had to smile and pretend to enjoy having this monstrosity outside my door. Is there anything I can do?

Dear Ithyphallophobic,

Thank your for you conveniently timed letter. The most common explanation the Blotter hears from abusers is “no one complained…”. Well, no one complained to him, maybe. Few people like to be the heel, so just because your neighbor’s message box isn’t bursting with complaints he shouldn’t assume that mine isn’t.

The second most common excuse is “But it’s a Mature sim…”. The key here is that they are called Mature sims, not XXX sims, not Scatological sims, and certainly not Disregard-the-Sensitivities-of-your-Neighbors sims. Living a Mature sim doesn’t give your neighbor the right to throw his penis in your face.

Happily, a new addition to the Community Standard makes this a bit more clear: ” Objects that would not be permitted on PG sims and are persistent (remain in world for sale/viewing/use when the owner/creator is no longer online) must be on private property and not be visible outside the property.:” This means that attachments, hand-held devices, and any other kink-apparatus are allowed for sale or use, but they should be put away when the user’s through. That’s just good manners, really.

Statistics: Seven complaints of harassment, intimidation, or vandalism, eight complaints about assorted rule violations, and four instances of inappropriate content on a PG sim, and two complaints of an undisclosed nature. As a result of these complaints and our subsequent investigations, six residents were suspended and six warnings were issued.
