Sales Clerks?

I think a similar thread to this was once posted but I can't find it so I am possibly asking a question that has already been answered. What are your opinions about having sales clerks on duty at shops? Do they help or hinder sales?

I am thinking about hiring some people to help our customers at The SexGirls Shop partly to give new people a way to earn money and also to see if it increases sales.

Susie I did a poll on this just a few weeks ago, it seems the biggest con against this idea is most people think it would not be cost effective. I on the other hand, think a store with steady traffic could really benefit from such a thing.

Not many in SL like to think outside the box. As anything, someone just needs to be the first to prove it is succesful, I believe then many would follow.

My experiences with sales clerks in SL have been extremely favorable, because it's sooo strange to be in a store in SL and have someone come to assist you. Actually, compared with offline, it's rather odd to enter a store with no one else in it -- I like that feel that there are other shoppers mingling about, some of the time anyway.

One of the great examples I will state is Ameshin Yossarian and Synthia Veil, owners of Curious Kitties. Several times I have gone in there and either one or both were present, and they greeted me with their wicked blend of humor and made my experience that much more favorable -- as well as demoing products they didn't yet have up on the shelves yet.

While it might be boring to stand around all day if customers are hard to come by, if the timing meshes together, it can be a really nice experience. :D

I think it's a wonderful idea. I wish more stores did it. I know that during beta (or shortly after the end of beta), Yuki Sunshine hired a few people to work in her stores, to help draw in customers. I was one of the people hired, but, never actually got a chance to go to work. :(

Thanks so far for the advice! The most common question I get asked by new people is how to earn money and, if nothing else, this would give a few of the them the chance to earn some.

My only concern is the same concern that first life employers have and that is getting dependable people who show up on time and work their full shift. We also have a dress code and it's not too hard to meet unless a person is really addicted to bling and MTV type wear.

Just like in first life I think I'll call for a meeting with Melissa King and her two builders to see what they think. :)

Sales Clerks?

i think it would be a great idea for instance yesterday i was in a ton of different shops and there was no one around at all and im a newbie to the game so i wanted to purchase things and was a little lost, especially once i actually bought some stuff i had no idea how to wear the things i bought so i was totally confused, had there been a sales clerk i probably could have asked her or him how to do what it is i needed to do.

if im online in often at my shop, or if im building and see someone show up ill go say hi. i rather like talking to people that show up, and while a few people get freaked out seeing the shop owner around many like it allot. and since i make fountains i often end up showing people fountains in place on their land so they have a better feel for the size and look.

and i really like meeting the people that make the things that i buy.

I personally think it would be really interesting and nice to have people in stores, I always hated the vending machines that decorate secondlife, store clerks would be nice.

but kind of creepy, and would make me feel pressured into buying things

Thanks Lo for posting the link to the previous thread and everyone else for their opinions. We are going to try this out and there is an employment notecard at our shop in Grizedale (218,103).

If nothing else it will give newbies a way to earn a few Lindens other than by escorting and dancing.

I worked for Yuki and I'd have to say that it did help her sales to have someone there, especially when I'd tp friends over. As a way of payment she would take the total of her sales while I was at the store and give me 10% commission of everything sold. I got pocket money, she got sales, everyone was happy.

Hmm this is an interesting idea. I have the time clock (not sure who made it right now) that can pay people for showing up and then so much per hour. I'm not sure what would be a fair hourly wage though. Also, its hard to compete with hoeing, err escorting and dancing when a lot of those people are making $500 an hour plus...

Actually the dancing does pay "IF" you like that kind of thing. The escorting only if you either act like the part. Few do here infact only once did I find someone actually acting like a total "escort". Escorts I have talked to say they do not get steady business and that the dancing would pay better. I also know that one or two locations in the game pay people to "help" show new people around. Not alot of money since it is not a sales sight and more of a gathering place.

My friend made quite a bit at escorting, sometimes 10K a day, but she had to literally work her behind off.

We are going to pay our sales clerks 50L an hour plus a free copy of whatever sells during their shift. A good sales clerk could get a free Sex Girls prison cell and they could set it up somewhere and have a place to live!

One of the things I love about SL is the fact that sales clerks/persons are totally unnecessary.

For example, I really don't like walking into a shoe, athletic apparel, or what have you store in RL, only to be hounded. I know what I like more than anyone else possibly could, therefore I don't need help. It's fine to ask "do you need help with anything?", that's great and is welcomed. It's the persistant hawks that get to me. I have a feeling they are not really interested in outfitting me with what I like, but rather are simply pushing me to up their commision. Shopping should be relaxing, not a dodge the salesperson affair. :)

I live near Mall of America, so perhaps I am a bit jaded. They have folks milling about in the mall proper, OUTSIDE stores, engaging in pressure sales. It makes me crazy, and I have gotten to the point where I see them up ahead, and I simply walk to the other side of that area to avoid them.

A side question; why is it that shoe stores seem to be the kings of pushiness? I notice this pushiness far more with shoe stores than any other type. I know if a shoe feels right on my foot (some dude pushing on my big toe and telling me that this shoe fits me is ridiculous), and I know how to tie them! :o

well you need to remember in real life you NEED money. THose sales people in relal life need that money to pay thier bills and feed thier kids and they might be on a commission. Frankly if I were a sales clerk here I would:

A) make sure the same RL sales pressure was not there (that's not fun and this is a game)
B) Ask if you needed help
C) Shoot the breeze with ya if ya wanted while you shopped...or tell me to bugger off and I'd go do something in the corner (Thinks "all By Myself" by Green Day on that one)
