Building on Shared Borders

I'm fairly new to SL, and I was hoping some people could help me with a situation concerning shared borders. One of my neighbors recently built a wall on our shared border with a row of trees behind it. I have no problem at all with the wall, it's on their land, it's their right to build whatever they want there, but the branches of the trees hang over into my land and are a pain in the ass when I'm trying to build things near that border because I always end up selecting the tree branches by accident. I have never met this neighbor or seen them in game, and so I don't know how to address the problem with them. I'm not even sure I really have a right to complain, since the objects are technically on their land, even though they hang over into mine. It would be easy for them to move the trees over a meter or so so they don't go into my land since the wall and trees are the only thing on a fairly good size lot. How do other people approach building near a shared border or dealing with people you don't have a calling card for and have never seen?

Hello Aeo :)

The best thing to do would be to send them a polite IM, explaining the problem and asking if they could move the trees a little. Most people won't mind getting this sort of request, as long as you do keep it polite!

If you don't have their calling card, you can get their profile by right clicking on any of their objects, selecting Edit, then press the profile button next to the owner name. You can then IM from here. Or use the Find button to search for them.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you able to delete objects that "hang over" your land?

Not that I'm saying you should unilaterally decide to do so in this case, as politeness is certainly the preferred method of dealing with things around here -- but it is something to consider as a last resort I suppose.

Then again, I may be wrong...I'm working on apparently outdated information in the .pdf manual. :D

Only if the object's center is on your land. Otherwise, the object is technically on the neighbor's land, and merely extends into your land. (With a linked set of objects, it's possible for something to extend quite far into your land and still be on your neighbor's land.)

Ahh...of course that makes more sense anyways. The .pdf manual alludes to a case where a thin spire is used to support a large platform which could be deleted in part if it hangs over your land.

Gotta love out of date info. :D Of course, with everything changing here as fast as it does, it's nothing short of a wonder that the .pdf isn't a v0.3 manual!

Man I love this place.
