Hello all, I'm new to Second Life. Brand spanking new.
Quick question: just wondering what kind of frame-per-second we can look forward to in retail. Is it going to stay the way it is now, at around 5 fps? Or is that just me?

Part of the beta is always improving the way the game runs....They will be working on that right up until the release and probably long after...It will probably always get better

Some people have seen fps as high as 40 to 50 so far, some maybe higher.
So its how your system is configured, net congestion, your network and isp. Then it goes to server load and the bandwidth at Linden Labs or wherever the sim servers are.
Besides you can't see anything beyond 25fps anyway so if we get to 25 consistantly we would be fine.
On good days im about 15 to 20 and I am quite happy with that rate.
