Yeah, maybe PG is bad terminology.
Maybe "unoffensive" might be a better term. _____________________
Taken from The last paragraph on pg. 16 of Cory Ondrejka's paper "Changing Realities: User Creation, Communication, and Innovation in Digital Worlds :
"User-created content takes the idea of leveraging player opinions a step further by allowing them to effectively prototype new ideas and features. Developers can then measure which new concepts most improve the products and incorporate them into the game in future patches." |

"offense" is too broad a term, i think. That which offends me does not offend others and vice verse. "PG" is a term that's been defined with some care. Mind, the part about Parental Guidance is not relevant here, but as to defining the content allowed it does a pretty good job.

A lot of things that might offend people could happen in a PG area. Just not sexual content.
Most things in a mature area wont offend much of the population. PG is a good name becuase its liek a PG movie .. you know what sorts of things to expect. The areas really are "content controlled" since sexual type contnet and bad language arent allowed. Perhaps CC would work as a name. then again PG works .. as long as people understand where the refence comes from. |

Anyone? I'm guessing that it sounds more classier than "X-rated content/activities permitted" and "x-rated content/activities prohibited". I heard some tale that the PG and Mature labels date back to the earliest days, when the grid was intended to have teens as well as adults. The teens wouldn't have permission to go to the Mature areas. (This story may be a bunch of crap- you've been warned!) _____________________

We have PG areas to provide a spread in land values, and for people that don't mind buying cheap "damaged" land and worrying about being AR'd for swearing or being paranoid over having furniture with snuggle animations on it.

Anyone? For the same reason a lot of adults still prefer to stick to PG movies. _____________________

I have been wondering about this also.
I try to stick to mature areas only, becuase its so much fuss to invite over my 58 years old mother to supervice my PG sim visits.... |

Just pretend your mother is watching you when you are in PG areas ;0 Unless you're kinda freaky that should be enough to keep things in line.

Because it was easier than coming up with a new terminology for what you would normally allow in a PG movie, then having to explain to everyone what it meant, over and over again. People already know what PG means, so no sense reinventing the wheel.

Why does PG translate to no sex in many people's minds? I may be wrong but if we didn't have sex in FL we would all be dead before we were even born. I suggest that PG refer to violence instead. In other words no shooting and no killing.

Unless your parents had coitus in a public venue, I suggest your logic is flawed. They may have. Thank you for reminding me to ask them but the point is that violence is far more objectionable to me than a little fooling around in a PG area. |

As violence is besically disallowed *anwyway*, why can I be afforded a place I can go and NOT be exposed to what I don't want to see. Don't look I hope you know I am not trying to start a war here. I just had a few minutes to spare. |

Why do we have parental guidence sims in a game that only allows people over 18? Anyone? Because some people need a break from the club sprawl when they want to build something. And they might actually want to use the ground to build something, too. ![]() See this thread. _____________________

all the e-sluts live in mature sims. what does that have to do with the Original posters question? the mature sims have the e sluts, true .. so what? This isnt an anti sex thread its a "Why is it called PG?" thread when no one in SL shoudl need parental guidance. Perhaps the PG could be Green Light and Mature Red Light .. LOL .. BUT of course is much more that goes on in Mature Sims than just sex. |

I've suggested in the past to change the PG and M to I and M for Immature and Mature Which way round though? But seriously, as has been explained before PG provides a quickly accessible indicator for "acceptable content" if it would be OK in a PG film it would be OK in a PG area. That limits sex, violence, language etc. Yes we're all over 18 (allegedly), but I remember in my very early days in SL meeting a fellow newby. He was happily married with kids IRL so presumably knows what sex is. But sex online was totally beyond the pale as far as he was concerned. I don't agree with his point of view, but whenever anyone suggests we should do away with PG zones because we're all adults I remember him, and vote against it. I think of it this way. To coin a phrase "SL lets me live my dreams." But it should let him live his dreams too! |
