Well with the recent worm going around it got me to thinking, now thinking isn;t always a good thing but it passes the time nonetheless. About to probably make some people wonder why I think what i'm thinking but here goes. I see we are still in a weakening economy but here's my question as well as observations?

This question goes out to the net experts, and I don't consider myself an expert so after my question I will post my opinion on the matter at hand. So my question is, do you think people in the virus protecting industry or software devoloping industry are hurting for peoples business?

The plain and simple reason I ask this correlates to my observation and opinion. I observed a really terrible exploitation with the Mblaster worm. I also notice a ton of free publicity links to all the virus protection software devolopers. I observed this worm as a lucrative market, more than simply a bad type of exploitation. I saw it as all the places laying people off and shutting down might, key word here being might have been effected in some way by people not upgrading their definitions list or simply purchasing new virus protection software.

It just seems to me like all of a sudden everyone was panicking and needed a quick fix, so I was thinking maybe the devolopers of these or 1 particular virus protection program, created the worm to increase sales. It sounds like a dirty accusation but I find it pretty convient.
You get pretty good exposure from alot of websites by accomplishing this. I hope I'm not right about this, but here's another way of seeing it. Not a good way but a different example. Say you are a mailbox making company, and you make the best mailboxes around.

They sell reallly really well, and you are in say just 1 town for example. Well the first month sales are really really good, but after that first month sales start to plummet and you start losing profits, simply because almost everyone in the town now owns a brand new one of your mailboxes. What do you do? Well yeah you could try another town, but in this example only 1 town is allowed. So your only other alternative is to hire some hoodlums to go out and smash mailboxes with baseball bats. This will surely increase profits once again. This probably is just me thinking too much, I just sat back and saw alot of bs looking things with this worm. Just wondering what others are thinking about it.

I pay an annual subscription for my virus protection and firewall, so my need for upgrades only means more work for them and no additional income.

You do have an interesting theory. I have heard of bored fire fighters starting fires to have something to do, so a virus protection company releasing viruses cant be as far fetched as it might sound.

The whole industry seems like a scam to me, I hate having to pay for virus protection. Its like insurance. You usually dont need it, you cant go without it, and your glad you had it when you needed it.

Well considering that some software companies put viruses on P2P networks to discurage file sharing this doesn't seem to far fetched. I got a virus from Ubi Soft once. Pretty nasty stuff...
