Just wondering...

I plan on playing World of Warcraft when it comes out. I was wondering who all else might be planing on playing and if there are a few of us if any would be interested in all joining the same server.

I'm starting to think SL should become a hub (at least for me). I can come and go from SL at will and this alows me to always have a place to return to. Once I have a CreditCard again I'll have land as well but even now I can always return to SL.

I think therefor the community might be able to use this as a centralized base for foreys into other systems (one day this might mean more than it does at the moment... heh the future makes me drool). This is sort of like my online club/clan...

Anyhow I was just wondering if anyone else is planing on joining as well and what we wanted to do. I personaly plan on being a human or night elf, server choice wont mean much till were closer to release.

The 'hub' is a main reason the ww2olers started coming to SL, to organize and meet

I'm planning on it with a vengeance, and most of my DAoC guild too. Would be great to find a server with both sets of folks.

The beta is nice. Very nice. For what little I played of it. :( I should have an internet connection at home again this weekend to play more. :)

Both myself and my wife definatly plan on buying it when it comes out. Heck if it was released in the state it was on the first day of beta we both would have bought it and urged all our friends to.

Hey Ama is there an NDA or can you tell us about it?

I would probably like to play WoW. I mean, you can ride wolves in it. That's an easy sell for me.

The only other MMORPG that impresses me on that level is True Fantasy Online for the Xbox...

And I don't think I'll be getting an Xbox...

NDA was lifted when they went into Beta.

I unfortunatly have not had a chance to play it very much, I havn't had internet for the last 3+ weeks except what I can steal at work and when we went to my inlaws for a day.

I can tell you it is very smooth and polished. It is easy to play, it is easy to solo, at least at lower levels. There are lots of quests and you don't have to hunt for people - they either have labels in their names ("General Goods", "BlackSmith", "Warrior Trainer";) or if they have a quest for you then they have a big ! or ? above their head. The quests range from the standard mundane to pretty interesting (again I only played for 3 days!). The abilities / classes are nice and unique (!).

For example my warrior had a Rage bar. First thought was "oh jeeze they gave the warrior a mana bar". Well yes, sort of except it works differently. Instead of slowly going up while you do nothing or as long as you don't use it, it goes up as you attack. The more/ better your attacks the higher it goes. If you don't attack for a while it drains away. You use rage to do special abilities and attacks. I hear there are different stances for a warrior to that effect how you do in battle (defence vs attack etc).

The trade skills from what I understand are nice too. You never lose components, you can only learn a recipe if your skill is high enough and the difficulty of the recipe decides how likely your skill is to increase. You may fail when foraging though, but I prefer that than spend 2 weeks finding all the parts for Cool_Armor only to have it fail when you try and make it. In other words if you are skilled enough to learn the recipe you can make the item if you have the ingrediants.

Death is kinda cool. You can wait for a rez or end up a ghost at your closest rez point. You then run back to your corpse immune from most monsters. If you don't want to run back you can pay a spirit healer an amount of XP to get your body and items back there.

There are lots of cool things, and Tyco from Penny-Arcade wrote up a good summary a little while ago. He characterized it as 'Humane' in that it removed a lot of the self torture other MMORPGs seem to think is needed. I tend to agree from what my three days showed.

DSL gets installed thoretically tomorrow so maybe I can give better info in a week or two. Depending on if Alek lets me play or not. :(

(For clarification, yes it is MY account. That has little bearing on whether I get to play or not though.)

Oh! Tell me about the mounts!

How do you get one? Does it depend on level? Class? Or can anybody get one?

Can only orcs ride Wolves? There was some hinting that non-orcs could get skills to ride wolves.

It would be SO COOL to be a Human Ranger and ride around on a wolf. *dances in dreams*

Relee,

Sorry I don't know. I just got DSL at home today finally. They just released Phase 2 which requires an entirely new 2+gig download because the revamped the patch system. Before that I didn't get to a point in the game yet to get mounts. I think some may depend on class, and maybe level, or maybe race. Arg thats no help sorry, when I know I will post. I think there are different kinds of mounts too, I think everyone gets to ride the huge eagle guys pretty early and that those are one of the main forms of travel for really long distances. There are duids who get to train animals too, so you might like that one. I think they deal with wolves a lot but I dunno if all races ride them.

As to issues I think Dave brought up:
If you don't like fantasy RPGs or fantasy MMORPGs then you won't suddenly like WoW. If you hated EQ, Ultima Online, DAoC, AC/AC2 then you won't suddenly like WoW. If you played any of those (or other fantasy MMORPGs) and thought 'Hey, I wonder what this would have been like if Blizzard made it' or 'Hey, this game is almost/kinda/sorta right but it could be better' then WoW is for you.

WoW is a "Classic" fantasy MMORPG (can such a term be used already for MMO games?). There is a lot, that when I look at it and play it, it just seems obvious that is the way it should be kind of thing. Fantasy MMORPGs are 'my thing' though. The people this will convert are (a) blizzard fans who feared the MMO before, (b) people who tried other MMOs and found them too painful or heard they were. And it should take a large chunk from other fantasy MMORPGs out there.

Defintely plan on playing. In fact I have written off all other fantasy mmorgs until this comes out, including my 5 year old and yes uber EQ mage. Raiding is just like work (show up on time, be prepared, etc.), tradeskills are unbelievably painful, soloing is boring (I mean how many guardians of fire can you kill before the novelty of soloing an elemental plane wears off), and the acquisition of loot is more about how often you show up for "work" (raids). There is no such thing as roleplay, in fact people consider you weird if you practice it (I mean real RP not just saynig "nay";)...and so on. IMHO EQ is used up...even the GoD expansion was just more of the same (my guild got deep into the key'd zones before I finally conceded that there was nothing new insofar as the experience).

I eagerly await WoW. I decided not to apply for the beta, since I really look forward to entering a game world I know absolutely nothing about, entirely on my own, and see what happens.

Did you see the commercial for it on the Revolutions DVD? It looked terrible. Maybe they had to rush to get the videos done in time for the DVD release, but... man, not lookin' good.

In this man's opinion anyway.
