Is there a distinction?

When you are in your real life and wish to tell something about second life and friends
there do you say "my friend XOX " or my " my online friend XOX" ?

For me I say "my friend" but wondered about others.

Is there a distinction?

Thanks for reading :D

When possible, I prefer not to refer to "real-life", but rather, "offline-life" or OL not just because of personal style, but a simple distinction. The word "virtual" is prone to falling down by the wayside with "cyber", although I'll joke about it (and will surely see them again in a retro context).

I just say "my friend" or if I have a name or a unique descriptor, I'll do that. One point of confusion comes if names which are distinguishable to read are hard to say (i.e. someone with numbers in the name), or if you know someone both in SL and OL (and aren't SOL ;) ), which to refer to them as. For my purposes, my biological name is Torley but my last name is different, but you can call me Torgeson all you want.

Nice thing to ask!

I say my friend, if my other friends say who the hell is that, then I say OH! From SL! then the eye rolling starts :P

I will only clarify if I am speaking with someone who is well acquainted with my SL world. Otherwise, I don't bother. In those instances, it is like saying "my buddy Smith from work said...". I am not really making a distinction, rather adding a descriptor where it has meaning for the listener.

I call them friends pure and simple. Not that they're necessarily either of those things.

SL, 1st Life & nomenclature!
08-30-2005 09:39
I usually end up having to explain where I know the folks from since the names are a bit out of the mainstream for common first names, and or the question of where I know these folks/how I do comes up and so I'll explain from online.

I try to say 1st Life vs. 2nd Life because I find it highly inaccurate to refer to 1st life as Real Life/World. Technically, it's all real. Besides, some of my online/SL buds are 1st Life buds I've brought over to SL, and yet they're still willing to talk to me, hehehe!

When non-online types object, I point out this is no different, other than the medium, than a pen pal or knowing someone only by voice over the phone. Does that make them less "real"? I certainly don't think so.

There are real folks on the other side of the keyboard, all over the world, and they're real. The method in which we meet might be digital, might be virtual, and yet it's real. Real time, really happening, and really darn engrossing (as we all can attest to, being here in the forums 300+ strong while the "world" is getting an update!), so there's nothing "un" real about it in my book!

I'm prone to nicname all my friends in SL so most in my FL don't give it any thought when I say, "I was talking with my friend <insert name> the other day and...<insert mundane comment>". Now if I continue the sentence with something like, "...right in the middle of our conversation, I got run over by a giant snail as a camel ran past.", that's when I get the odd stares and raised eyebrows.

RL/SL - Friends are friends. :)

I do use "online friend" when talking to RL friends cause they all know each other and they would be like "who's that?" anyways, so I clarify before the confusion begins.

For me, I think it all depends on who I'm talking to, and who I'm talking about..

For instance, most times my good friends are "my friend soandso" and people that are more just acquaintances are "this person I know online" or something similar. Anyone that knows me, knows I do the SL thing and rarely shut up about it :p

Of course, my bf is just ... That guy *ducks and covers*
