What does the Second Life (TM) logo mean?

I am wondering about this. If you are seeing the same layout I am, which you probably are, then look to the upper-left-hand corner.

You are seeing a flat hand with an open palm featuring five digits and a swirly -- what appears to be an eye of some sort -- in the palm of this hand. This, of course, is the Second Life (TM) logo.

Also pictured here:

And prominently on the splash screen itself.

What does it mean? Does it have symbolic purpose? :D

It's an Illuminati symbol.

It's symbolic purpose is far too deep to reveal to the unwashed masses.

Its up to LL to tell us their meaning for it - but the "eye-in-hand" symbol has a long history of use in various cultures. LL actually once had a link on the SL links page to a site exploring the symbology (whatever happened to that?).

I did a quick google search and came uponthis site which gives various examples of use and meanings... like this one:

From: someone
What does it mean? The pancultural Eye-in-Hand icon manifests the integral and interactive bond between two essential human functions: sensing/observation (the Eye) and doing/acting (the Hand). Together these two abilities represent the most effective symbolic condensation of the ideals of human existence - omniscience (all-knowing) and omnipotence (all-powerful) - in a very simple two-part icon: the Eye in the Hand.

Its a very interesting symbol and I'm glad that LL chose it for SL's logo.

Malachi - I thought it was the "eye-in-pyramid" for the Illuminati.

With the well known tendency - over the millenia - for the Illuminati to hide their secrets in plain sight, it doesn't surprise me at all that they have used this symbol. How many verticies (or faces) does the square bottomed pyramid have? How many digits on the hand? See the connection?

Ah very good point Malachi - the Law of Fives and all that. :)

It only makes sense that the Illuminati would want to have their hands on this emerging virtual universe.

It's an (fnord) Illuminati symbol.

Indeed, like the one eyed smiley in the triangle.. although I always thought the 'swirly' was a sphincter... hmmm (tilts head) yeah it does sort of look like an eye... but I think 'An asshole on every hand' also has a ring of truth to it as well.

I think what we need as a symbol is .... two snakes... LIKE THIS (dramatic pose)... FACING EACH OTHER...

(sorry Conan was on the TV the other night - I often wonder if Shatner were his acting coach)...

Siggy.

It's also similar to the hand icon used in Uru. I doubt it was intentional, but the similarity was noted on the Uru section of Ubi Forums.

I saw a popular contact lense case that had nearly an identical logo as SL. It was so close that I began to become curious if the SL logo was a known symbol. LOL I can't think of the brand off the top of my head, but I can find out again.

I would like to see a small graphic added to the base of the hand that looks like currency, much like a dollar bill.

Then the meaning would change drastically.

Eye, hand, over my money!
