I've been thinking that there is quite the glut of mentors lately in the welcome area and what with the liasons and the greeters I thought SL was doing very well in the help department.

I noticed recently however there are "private" helpers in the form of the NCI or "New Citizens Incorporated" group also helping people out in the welcome area. Is this a new thing?

I guess the more help the better, but could someone in the group please post about the purpose of the group? The reason I ask is some folks I was talking to in the welcome area were concerned about a "creepy" guy talking to a little girl avatar that turned out to be an NCI helper.

The information he was handing out looked okay and everything, I was just wondering what the purpose of the group was, and how as a mentor I know that an NCI helper is trustworthy or "safe."

Lol, we are all supposed to be adults here. Why would it be creepy to talk to each other. The reason it is considered creepy is because a grown person has a child avatar. The guy av can't do anything about that.

Well it's just a perception, and "creepy" is of course subjective.

I was just standing in a group of folks and two or three of them IM'ed me about the "creepy" guy talking sexy to the little girl avatar. Then I found out he was from this group so I'm asking is all.

I want to know as a mentor, if I should "officialy" be telling newbies to avoid or not avoid the group as it seemed to me and to a couple of others that this person had an additional agenda to his "helping" one.

For instance as a mentor I would never hit on another player.
I might smile a lot and I might happen to drop my address into the conversation if it seemed it might be welcome, :) but I would not walk up to a newbie and offer to show them porn or offer to take them to someplace where they could see sex attachments. I dont think that's nice at all and the fact that the avatar in question looked like six year old girl just added that extra-creepy twist to the procedings.

At least with the Linden hepers and mentors you know that someone has checked them out a bit and watched them work. I am wondering if this group does any "checking" basically. Was this a normal guy who happened to be so horny he forgot himself? Or is this just standard procedure for him? What are the motivations for someone to be a helper but not be a linden helper?

Personally the comment was pretty mild to me and it did not upset me much, but the girl was not happy about it and like I said a couple of other folks IM'ed me with the "creep" thing. It's a perception that is out there anyway.

Hi Dianne,

I am the founder of the New Citizen's Inc (NCI) group. Here is the description of the group:

This is a group formed to welcome new folks to Second Life at the Welcome Area
?Help them with any questions they may have, and offer support in their endeavors in SL.

Below is the Charter:
Noobies Helping Noobies; Midbies Helping Noobies;Oldbies Helping Noobies:
*This is a support system for those who are new to SL.
*Helping New Citizens find out and implement what they want to do, be and/or accomplish here is our prime focus.
*You can be new for as long as you need to be and avail yourselves of what we have to offer; and we also hope that you can in turn teach/help/encourage others who come along after you.
*We help new folks with building, scripting, clothing design, selling, events and jobs.

You do not need to be a member of this group in order to get help, recieve the NCI Welcome pack or avail yourselves of the expertise of our helpers :)
Likewise you do not need to be a member of this group to get on the notecard list of helpers.

Robin Linden's forum signature has a quote from Mahatma Gandhi that says:
"You must be the change you wish to see in the world."
That is the essence behind behind my desire in creating this service for all in SL
†******************

I DO speak with those who express the desire to help folks at the welcome area. There are times when I'm able to give a more thorough "interview" and times when I am not. I know that we are all adults here, and I expect folks to take the information given and to use their own judgement.

We are also all human beings, and while I have almost daily interraction with new people coming into SL, its also my "home" and I've made several new friends while going about my "duties" for the NCI.

I'm not sure what was creepy about that situation, but if anyone has any specifics and knows what was said - please PM them to me here or IM them to me inworld.

My group has been around coming on 6 months now, and I haven't had any complaints about the Helper's behaviour. That being said, of course I'll look into this situation; but as I said I'd need more information.

SL is a place where we create the content and the goal of my group was simply to do that in the area of helping new residents get a good start in SL.

NCI also sponsors a weekly Noobie Show & Tell, the Helping HAND - the Noobie Yellow Pages, and has rented land for with sandbox, event area, freebie & 1 dollar store and helpful information for Noobies.

NCI is a great group. I'm also a Second Life Mentor. Brace does a wonderful job of holding events and helping out newbies.
