I would like to publicly state my severe disappointment with the current state of hardware manufacturing.
Quality standards have dropped so low lately that most hardware seems purposefully designed to break right after warranty expires, and they keep reducing the warranty on computer parts. I have a 486 that is still meriily chugging along after more than 10 years with ZERO replaced components. All the computers I had after that one have died a sudden and tragic death. Actually when my hard drive failed a while ago I took the HD in my 486 and put it in this computer. Its unbearably small and slow but at least I can play SL and read some websites. I have no doubt that my 486 will still be meriily chugging along by the time I decide to get yet another computer. |

Build your next computer with an ASUS motherboard and some RAM from their QA list. You won't be disappointed. I've been building all my systems with ASUS motherboards for the last five years and I've never had one die on me. The one non-ASUS system I bought (a barebones pizzabox) was dead within a year.
Good reliable stuff:
Stuff that has failed me:
Also the Intel OEM heatsink fan is not sufficient for keeping their 3.0GHz and up CPUs cool under load, not even when the system is clocked to factory specs, never mind overclocked. _____________________

I agree huns.
The sad truth is that retailers and even often manufacturers would have you believe there is little to no difference in stability or functionality from one 'hidden' component to another, and that could not be further from the truth. Quality parts can make all the difference in the world. When I build computers they cost a slight premium from what you could buy at Best Buy. They last about 5 times as long or longer though. Even things like the powersupply can effect stability, if the power is fluctuating the chip will not respond well. The worst is that many of these problems lay dormant until the system is put under stress, which means heavy software which means all your computer component manufacturers are going to blame the software you are running. _____________________

Then again, Eggy's 486 probably has a hard drive somewhere along the order of 20 megs or so (if it's as old as the 486), and now we have drives of over 200 GB! (And I'm sure Linden Labs are using RAIDs of BIG disks to store all our crap.
) So considering just how much more bittage is on HDs these days, the quallity has REALLY improved or we'd be seeing a lot more bad block errors.Personally, I've had fewer and fewer drive problems over the years anyway. _____________________
