Interaction Question

I am a newbie and I am so lost. My boyfriend and I came to Second Life together and were incredibly disappointed that we were not able to kiss and touch each other. I asked a question in tech support about it and got back a response saying "ask around and probably other residents have come up with ways to make it happen." So this must have something to do with programming with LSL, right?

We are not programmers, so we are at a loss and thinking of leaving the game. What are the possibilities and does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks, Mikki

That is a weird response from Lindons in my opinion. They pretty recently asked about multi-person emotes (such as kissing, hugging etc.). It is my understanding that although not implemented yet, these things will be comming soon(tm).

Mikki,

No, your *avatars* cannot kiss and hug in the game *yet* -- as Ama pointed out, it is expected that at some point in the not too distant future, *avatars* will be able to kiss and do other interactive animations.

I hope you'll stay and check out all the wonderful already-implemented features of SL before you pack it in.

On interactions in general

Single avatar motions are easy. We just create the animation and load it into the system.

Animations requiring mutiple avatars (more than one) are hard, and if you consider all the things involved, you can see why.

Lets try a handshake:
The animation for both avatars needs to be triggered.
The height of both avatars needs to be determined and adjusted to account for short vs tall avatars.
The hands must meet on the same three axis
The fingers then need to roll around each others hands - which is very difficult to render.

Since we allowed customization of the height, hand size, arm length, and torso shape, we have made it very difficult to allow something as simple as a handshke. If we had plain-old non-customizable avatar sizes as some other games do, we wouldn't have as much difficulty with this type of animation.

Among other problems is that the avatar system wasn't built to handle that close level of interaction with *other* avatars. We opted for avatar customization over single-use animations. Seriously, how many people will you kiss in-world? I suspect not as many as you would wink too.

Hope this answers some questions.

I agree with skedelee, that is hilarious. You want to watch 2 avatars kiss? How dumb. LOL
