Possible business/store landmarks listing?

Hey all,

As an avid spender and shopper in SL (as many of you probably already know!), I'm wondering if we could compile a notecard of landmarks for businesses in different categories.

I know that there is a fee of $500 that we can pay to have things listed somewhere, but being that we all pay enough in taxes, is there someone or somehow we can get a listing going?

I know in my most recent travels, many places have moved and/or ceased to exist. I had a decent bunch of landmarked stores, but it's getting smaller and smaller. I do a lot of traveling around, but I'm sure there are some smaller, more hidden places that I'm missing.

Thoughts? :)

There are ad booths that dispense notecards when clicked. For those looking to place ads in SL, that's what the ad booths are for. Last I checked there is one near Stage 4 and some telehubs have them too.

I have also seen directories and these dispense notecards with listed shopping sites. Some of these have to be updated since some of the landmarks are incorrect.

I'm looking for a list of stores that sale prefeb houses.
I have seen one store but they do not have what
I'm looking for. I thought I saw a two story white
house with brown trim but I did not mark it and
now I want it but can not find it.

Don, check my shop in Tan (108, 184) for several boxed pre-fab houses that Lordfly has for sale. If you're looking for something specific, talk to Lordfly; you might get him to build something along the lines of what you want for cheap if you don't want exclusivity.

Ezhar Fairlight also has a half-timber Tudor-style house (two story, white with brown trim) somewhere that he usually gives away if you ask him nicely. He has a freebie dispenser at the south border of Tan, the house might be in that.

We do need a shopping directory. I know that Loki used to have one, but I'm not sure if it's current. Jon, perhaps you could take on the task of compiling and distributing a list, charging a small fee for business people who would like to be listed with you, and find a good way to make it available to the public. I've given up paying the ridiculous $500/week fee for the SL directory listing. Loki also used to do a shopping tour event, which was kind of neat.

I'm building a SL fan web site. One feature on it is a searchable business directory. You'll be able to search for 'shoes', for example, and it will list all stores with shoes. You can then click the link to go to that store inworld.

Today or tomorrow I'll have a form up to fill out for any business, service, etc., wishing to be listed.

The directory will also have separate pages you can just browse by category, e.g., clothing, furniture, vehicles, etc.

Once the business directory is underway, there will be an entertainment directory, also searchable and browsable.

Anyone who might be interested in working on the business directory, or other sections of the web site, I would welcome the help. Other sections include (but not limited to):
- News
- personal and business websites (subdomains)
- blogs
- forum including private forums for groups, projects, sims, etc
- resources (links to online resources)
- classified ads
- online auctions
- resident photo albums
and more

Thanks,
Candie

Ok I've got the form ready to post as soon as I complete a list of primary categories for businesses and services. Here's what I have so far. Further input on types of businesses and services would be helpful.

Please chime in with types of businesses and services you've seen in SL.

Thanks,
Candie

First of all, thank you very much for offering this website Candie! I look forward to not only listing my business there, but also using the site to find other place I would like to visit.

While I do not have a suggestion for an additional category to add, will it be possible for businesses to be listed in more than one of the current categories?

I ask this because of places like mine. Downstairs I sell clothing and furniture and other items, all G rated to PG13 rated max. Upstairs, I sell photos, artwork, and clothing of an adult nature (R to XXX). And will soon have a new additonal interactive type item. I do this so that I can appeal to a wider audience, and since I know that being in a mature zone doesn't always mean that someone wants to see "adult type" items.

So I'm just interested to know if I would be able to list a place like mine in a variety of categories? I assume if this is possible, I would just submit a seperate form for each of the categories I needed, and adjust the description accordingly?

Thank you again! =)

There is an informational I-Booth In the welcome area right next to Stage 4 that I have set up there. Businesses... Clothing, Weapons, Multiple outlets, Scriping etc. The booth has been there since August, and is regularly updated once a week tops (links checked by a linden and myself). There is also a mailbox for anyone to leave a notecard describing their businesses and a landmark. So anyone interested in a listing, feel free to just drop a note or give me an IM. Anytime something is dropped into the mailbox, I recieve an IM for it. So it's usually updated into the system pretty fast.

I'm thinking of another version of this booth that includes themed community information as well... as their seems to be a major lack of information reguarding themed communities or groups.

Great Candie, very useful. Could you post a link or the web address so I can go and look?

Thank you

Candie, considering the flurry of new hovering vehicles in SL, could you please add the category "Vehicles Aircraft/Hovercraft"? They seem to be more popular than the motorcycles.

Pen - thanks, hunny bunny :) Whereas your business or service will be listed in one primary category (the biggest or best thing you offer), in your description, you can list everything else you offer. In fact you *should* list everything else you offer. The indexing program goes through your business/service description and picks up on everything you put in there. So if you primarily offer furniture and that's the category page you appear on, but you happen to offer the one and only pair of pink fluffy bunny slippers in SL, and you've put that in your description, when someone searches for 'pink fluffy bunny slippers', your business will pop up. That's what I really like about the indexing system I'm using.

Water - maybe we could work together to build one comprehensive directory -- a master directory?

Garth - look for an announcement later today

Cubey - done and thanks

Thanks,
Candie
