Book group anyone

Hello!

I am really keen on the idea of a book group within SL but none of the existing ones seem to be functioning. If anyone knows otherwise please let me know.

Anyway, I thought that I would have a go at setting one up myself. If I can get 2 other people to join initially then I will be able to create an SL group and get the ball rolling.

The format I suggest is that we take it in turns to choose a book and then meet once a month to discuss it. And perhaps take it in turns to host the group at our virtual homes. I am a member of a real life book group also and I thought it would be a good idea to start by reading the same book in parallel, "The History of Mr Polly" by H.G.Wells.

So, I invite anyone is interested to discuss this book at my SL home one month from now. Let me know your names and I will set up a group and send more info.

Best wishes

I'd suggest saving yourself the group creation fee and joining the The Second Life Book Club and utilizing the structure which is already there, that being the group itself as well as a group forum and a website. The group was started with the hopes of attracting authors inworld in addition to having book discussions. When the group founder needed to leave SL, she asked me to take over most likely because I had volunteered to help her out once. I declined knowing the amount of work required and the minimal response generated with my earlier attempt to help her with group communications. I subsequently agreed to join 2 others in trying to keep the group alive but none of us individually or collectively have the time available to get this group established and vital.

Groups tools in SL do not make for easy communications as people generally view group chat as intrusive and mass notecard distribution requies the use of key #'s which is a privacy concern for some. Personally I would be satisfied with book discussions being the group's only focus. Inworld authors would be interesting and a great boost to SL but that would require someone dedicated to that ideal with a lot of time invested to make it a reality.

Maybe it was just the timing, summer being a bit of an off time for readers, but I didn't find the effort out to be balanced by the interest. I wonder if the SL experience doesn't take away a chunk of the book reader's spare time. I've often heard it commented that individuals didn't read as much since they joined Sl. Hopefully it just takes time and patience to find and gather the SL readers into a cohesive group.

Hi Margaret

Thanks for this. I did actually join your club when I arrived in SL (a week ago!) The idea of a virtual book group was very appealing to me and I was disappointed that nothing was happening.

I think your idea is a good one and would be happy to push things forward myself. I think the group messaging can easily be kept to an absolute minimum (virtually zero.) Perhaps just an initial message letting everyone know what was happening. From then on all arrangements for the next meeting and book could be discussed at the meeting itself. And posted on the group description, maybe set up as an event as well to generate new interest.

I don't think there would be much work involved but I can see how there would be if you were doing all this other stuff you mentioned.

Would you be able to set me up as an officer of the group so I can get things moving?

I demoted myself to member since it was misleading to suggest that I was doing anything so I can't make you an officer. If you'd like to make a serious attempt at this I'd be willing to give it another go and assist you. I'll contact the other officers and recommend that they promote you and see if they want to reinstate me. Would you care to meet inworld to discuss further?
