Welcome to SL Silver To be able to buy land, you will need a premium account, ie pay Linden Labs monthly, quarterly or annually in US$. Also when you pay for such an account, your weekly stipend will be 500L$ a week rather than 50L$ which is a big difference. By the way, Linden Labs pay our stipend on a Tuesday, so if you do decide to get a premium account, worth doing it before then. You can buy a 512sqm plot of land as a new player, for 1L$ a sq are metre, ie L$512. This is a one time only offer. After that, if you decide to buy more land, or new land, you will have to pay the market rate, which is a great deal higher than L$1 per sqmhmm . There are no further costs associated with having this size land, but if you buy more land, then you will be liable for further US$ payments, called tier. This depends on the amount of land you buy and ranges from US$5 right up to US$200 a month for a whole sim or island. I hope this helps, but if you need to know anything further, please post again and someone will be sure to answer your question. Alexa

Alexa Excellent, thanks VERY much for that Alexa, I'm sure that was somewhere in the welcome emails or the help pages, I've just been so eager to get going and learn from mistakes rather than reading ) I guess I'll have to upgrade to the paid version now rather than wait out my trial period!! thanks again Silver

Alexa pretty much covered it all, but you may want to consider buying the quarterly membership for US$22.50. It only costs US$7.50 that way. Once you consider yourself hooked, the yearly at US$72 (US$6.00 a month) is the big bargain.
Welcome to SL. Pick your first land carefully! Don't resell it cheap.

Future Land Baron?

Silver, if you're looking for quick money, I'd suggest buying and reselling land.
Its how the "big boys" got their money.
Also, make sure you stay away from hard work... regardless of what people on this board say, there's way more money in selling sex, tringo, or land.

If you tell 100 newbies this a week, you're going to have 100 more land barons, tringo pots, and clubs. Eventually the market WILL get saturated, if it isn't already. Land barony is only profitable, realistically, via two ways: extreme markup, or sheer volume. Unless you have several thousand dollars to spend initially, you have little chance of getting your foot in the door with volume. And the extreme markup runs the risk of your land simply not selling. Land marketeering isn't a good thing for a newbie to get into. Relax, go to some events, maybe learn a skill or two. Take your time. LF

Bear in mind that when and if you buy land, you can put only 117 or so prims down on a piece of 512 land. That is prims, not objects - objects usually have more than one prim. You can find places to rent, though, that allow you to put more prims out.

LF Point taken. But if you want to make BIG money, land barony is probably the easiest way.

From: Jamie Bergman Point taken. But if you want to make BIG money, land barony is probably the easiest way. Indeed, but only if you have significant startup capital. It's very very hard to become a land baron by buying a plot here, a plot there, selling for a profit, etc. when you're going up against the likes of Anshe, who works many many many hours a week selling and buying, you're likely to get steamrolled (unintentionally... you'd be a bug being hit by the windshield of her company). Plus it's a lot of work (not hard, just time consuming), plus the profit margins are slim, plus it isn't fun. And SL should be about having fun, eh? LF
