I find it kind of sad that resident referrals are turned off by default.

In other words, if you refer someone they have to specifically check the box to make sure you get your referral.

I think LL might want to either change the value of referrals and turn that box on by default or scrap the project altogether.

Another alternative is to warn anyone who is using the link that users will have to specifically do something in order for you to get your referral.

Right now the text is extremely misleading:

From: someone

very person who clicks on your link, anywhere it appears will be automatically credited to you as a referral. And, if they purchase a Second Life Basic Account, you'll get L$1,000. If they purchase a Premium Account, you'll get L$2,000.

It's not automatic at all.

That is an awfully deceptive way of handling things.

"User-created content takes the idea of leveraging player opinions a step further by allowing them to effectively prototype new ideas and features. Developers can then measure which new concepts most improve the products and incorporate them into the game in future patches."

I agree 2000%.

I have stopped refering people since this was changed.
Also, if I were one of the people who had paid for the co-op program on boingboing.net, I would be livid.

LL needs to change this fast.

Right now, I reset my mindstate to one as if I hadn't joined SL, and I will say I am confused by going to the front page and looking for the "where to join" button. Yes, the yellow-orange cue of the box on the left is a sign, but there is no further indicator that it's what I need to click in order to be a Resident of SL apart from a too-subtle mouseover cursor switch. Something more tactile, IMGO, would be the that button switching to a different glow graphic when you mouseover it.

Or even wording like "CLICK HERE TO START YOUR FREE TRIAL". It sounds obvious, but that's just the way I perceive it.

Why isn't there a join text link on the page too? Something like "click here to join now"? :)

Robin explains here the check box is for tracking purposes only. You get the referal no matter what.

The referal system is rather hit or miss, you may get the money, you may not. I am credited with 33 yet there are dozens more I know I refered. Not that I have room to complain since I got a lifetime account out of it, just a little info. What is really suckie is if someone, at anytime, clicked an SL referal link in the past, that person is locked in and can't refere anyone else. (that's the way it was a while ago back when i cared) So if joe Shmoe clicked a link a year ago on a forum then desides to join SL and wants to refere a buddy, the anonomus link gets the cash, not the buddy... I had this happen quite often, people would put me down but the cash went elsewere. I was dissapointing a lot of people because they would refere me and if they did I gave them a free avatar or split the L$, but if Bling Bling the asshat got the cash then they were out of luck... and they were pissed to boot. I gave up on refering folks because of that. Make it look like I was ripping them off.
