That's sad. Of the corporate and governmental mouthpieces that litter prime-time news, I found him the most palatable.

I agree with all of you, I felt the same way about him. I remember him all the way back to when I was just a tyke in the 60's. It's a shame.

I didn't know anything about him, but I read this article, and it gave quite a good insight into the man. Maybe it will be pleasing to those who took an interest in his work/life:

I was listening to NPR today, and Cokie Roberts was talking about how during the coverage of the last election, he was very excited. He'd just become an American citizen, and was looking forward to his first vote. As it stands, it was his only vote. He will be missed.

In the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks in 2001, I spent some time flipping between various channels trying to find the best news coverage. With all of the choices available, including the 24 hour news channels, I settled on the ABC coverage. Peter Jennings absolutely rose the occasion.

Well said. That was always the impression I got from him as well. He'd report 'the facts' and keep his opinions to himself, but deep down you knew he probably really wanted to host The Daily Show so he could just sing-song "bullllshiiiiiiiit".
