First I have to say Second life looks awesome. But I'm frustrated with 56k modem HELL. I just moved 2 month ago so I don't have Roadrunner (cable) anymore. And it is pure torture being back at 56k. I would have broadband back already if it wasn't for certain people jerking me around. I can't wait for the time when 56k is gone for good, when you can't even have it anymore. But that will probably not happen for a while since new computers still come with a free 56k modem. I just want to be able to walk around and meet some of you people and build stuff and whatever else you can do. In the mean time I keep calling the people to see if I can get hooked up yet. The problem is that before I moved I was told that I was going to be able to get cable but the day I moved in I was told that, that is not true. Then I was told that I could get satelite but for some reason I can't get that either. So now they are saying I can get something close to a T1 line except they want 5 out of the 20 people living here to get it before they hook me up. The thing is that all the people here in this apartment builing including me are phisically disabled and on low income ssi and medical assistance stuff like that. So a lot of people don't even want it. I feel totally screwed and misinformed on the apartment all together and if I knew right away that I could not have cable I probably would not have moved here.
So now you know why I am frustrated.
I'm calling again Monday, wish me luck,
Mona Jade

Hey...Welcome to Second Life! I'm sorry to hear you're having a hard time with your connection. Is it possible to get DSL there? Good luck! I hope you get your problem resolved soon.

Sorry to hear, but you need cable to run this game
Until then turn all setting on lowest, that may help with bandwith, and turn cache size to maximum

Hey Merriman , Ryen and Tooz. Thank you for the welcome and the advice I will definatly give it a try. And I bet as soon as it works for me I'll probably get broadband, but that might be wishful thinking huh?
So how do I find Shebang?
wish me luck, Mona Jade

Cable??...naw

I dropped cable a long time ago.........their bandwidth blows between 7 and midnight. Called bottlenecking. Once I got DSL.........all my problems stopped with lag. SL, Ultima Online and Eve runs so smooth with DSL.........no lag at all.

Awesome news you guys I'm getting hooked up next week. So I only have to suffer at the most one more week, finally!!! I can't wait to explor and get out of the greetings area. It is so hard to walk around right now so I am still in the area that you go to when you graduate. Plus I want to join groups and party and meet people. Anyway hope to see you guys soon.

Hey Mona -- sorry I didn't notice this thread before now.
Yes, I do play via 56k -- have been since May, when like you, I moved and my new place can't get anything.
Well... I *could* get a fractional or full T1 ($500 per month for the frac / $700 for a full!), but I can't justify that right now, unfortunately.
In world... I'm pretty much a hermit, but in a "quiet" location. The welcome area is one of the worst places for you to hang out right now, because it's not very quiet (at least not what I remember of it). Get yourself a landmark to the Native American Village or any other very quiet area, and you should be able to do a bit of building and scripting... things still get pretty bad when someone first comes into the area, especially if they're on a hoverboard or any other scripted-physical object, but if you just wait it out, the packetloss/lag eventually goes away after a while. Almost forgot -- the reason you want a landmark rather than just sim name and co-ords is that you should be able to teleport to the location (wait until a time when your packetloss is at 0%, then hit the teleport) -- then once at the location, stand still until packetloss goes back down to 0 again. Might even wanna set that new location as your "home" until you get your broadband setup.
Welcome to the club, albeit temporarily --- you are now "shebangin' it" =)

#! Just curious, how much have you done with the bandwidth settings in the preferences? Was wondering what results you get setting things like sound to 0 in custom bandwidth settings.

From: someone Until then turn all setting on lowest, that may help with bandwith, and turn cache size to maximum Oh yeah, network settings, choose the 100kb one, then select Custom and dial them all down manually. I've got 0 going to wind, clouds & water so I wouldn't have to cut objects and art as much. You want the sum of all those settings to be somewhere around 50000. #!

Was wondering what results you get setting things like sound to 0 in custom bandwidth settings. Haven't tried that particular one -- not down to 0 anyway. Just checked my settings real fast: Land: 5000 Water: 0 Wind: 0 Cloud: 0 Object: 25000 Sound/Art: 20000 Oh also Mona: Set your draw distance to 64 (that's the lowest it will go) and your avatar composite limit to 1 (these two are on the Display tab in preferences). I don't notice any difference lag/packetloss-wise on the object detail slider on that page -- whether it's all the way to the right or the left or smack in the middle doesn't seem to affect anything other than how pretty the objects appear to be, so I keep it all the way to the right so they're as pretty as they can be. #!
